"2"gether or not "2"gether...that is the "?" (updated)
>From my daily interaction with overseas Chinese HuaQiao residing in
California whose origins come from various Asian regions of Chinese
cultural spheres of influences, I have taken particular interest &
linguistical attention to how the various Chinese languages pronounce the
#"2".
>From dialect to dialect, there are consistant similar cross-linguistical
counting patterns from 1-10 with the exception of the #"2".
For some unique reason, the #"2" seems to remain inconsistantly
represented among the various Chinese languages for example:
Standard Mandarin:.......... er
SuZhou-hua..................... lan
ShangHai-hua.................. liang
WuHan-Mandarin:............ yao
NanChang-JiangXi-hua... o
Standard Cantonese:........ yi
ZhongShan Cantonese:... ngii
TaiShan Cantonese:......... ngei
KaiPing Cantonese........... ngei
MoiYan Hakka................... ngii
ChaoZhou-hua................. noh
HaiNan-hua........................noh
XiaMen-Fujianese............ nung
TaiWanese........................ nung
TaiWan-Hokkein............... nung
Can you see the various linguistical relationship in counting from
1-10 from the example below by looking at the intials & finals? It
would also be helpful if you super-impose these languages onto a
geographical context.
Standard Mandarin:.Yi Er San Si Wu Liu Qi Ba Jiu Shi
SuZhou-hua...... :.Yat Lan Sei Si Ng Luk Chit Boht Jiu Saht
ShangHai-hua.... :. Yea Liang Sei Si Ng Lok Chiet Boht Jiu Sahk
WuHan Mandarin:. Yi Yao San Si Wu Liu Qi Ba Jiu Shi
NanChang-JiangXi-hua:. Yit O San Si Ng Liu Qi Ba Jiu Siht
Standard Cantonese:.Yat Yi Saam Sei Ng Luk Chat Baat Gou Sahp
ZhongShan Cantonese:.Yat Ngii Saam Sii Ng Luk Chit Baat Giu Sahp
TaiShan-Cntonese:.Yit Ngei Schlaam Schlei Ng Luk Tiit Baat Giu Sihp
KaiPing-Cantonese:. Yiet Ngei Schlaam Schlei Ng Luk Tut Baat Gieu Sihp
MoiYan-Hakka.... :.Yit Ngii Saam Sii Ng Liuk Chit Baat Giu Soop
ChaoZhou-hua.. :. Jik Noh San Sii Ngou Lak Chit But Gou Juhp
HaiNan-hua.. :. Yang Noh Da Di Ngau Lak Shiet Boi Gau Dahp
XiaMen-Fujianese.. :. Jik Nung Sah Sii Ngou Lak Chit Bot Gou Jahp
Taiwanese....... :. Jik Nung Sah Sii Ngou Lak Chit Bot Gou Jahp
TaiWan-Hokkien..: Jit Nung Sah Sii Gwo Lak Chit Bei Gau Sahp
Please let me know how your Chinese dialect counts from 1-10. The
way your special language pronounces the #2 could reveal how much
"2"gether we really are.
Just think: "2"gether-ness may just be the missing link that will
unite us or divide us.
Sincerely,
Charles Louie

P.S. Based on actually talking with people from the following
communities, the "schl-" sound is not only found in Yue Territories
between TaiShan to MaoMing in Western GuangDong but in Coastal GuangXi,
North Vietnam (but absent in Vietnamese), HaiNan Island (but have not
been confired to exist in "Hainanese" or the indigeonous Li community
(found no where else in China) whom I believe are from the original
ancient Yue community), and PuTianese in FuJian Province. Because most of
these languages are all structurally different from one another leads me
to believe Yue culture still exists among us and is not extinct. And
though I do trace my Han ancestry back from the northern plains of China,
I am not ashamed to acknowledge that my ancestry is not purely Han.
When the Song Chinese came to immigrate into GuangDong, it is difficult
for many Chinese to accept the fact that many of us may have minority
lineages. Some people use population statistic to prove it is impossible
to have minority lineages, but even today, China has a hard time counting
unreported births after the first child is born. These unreported births
do not have certificates therefore "do not exist" in populations
statistics. Some believe the Yue tribes fled to other lands like
Vietnam, but who can confirm that they didn't changed their minds and
returned to be reassimilated back home?
And speaking of "home"... "Home" is where the heart is. And even if you
don't live there or speak the local language, no one can ever take that
away from you because it will always be there for you (unless there is a
massive plate techtonic earthquake in the deep dark volcanic trenches
surrounded by molten glowing red lava in the South Pacific Ocean right
off of the continental shelf of South America in the middle of a
blossoming Red Tide which was contaminating the dwindling Blue-Fin Tuna
populations during an instant El Nino weather transition to a La Nina
cooling trend thus forcing all the whales to migrate northward for
plankton-rich waters near the Arctic where Japanese whalers in the
desguise of "scientific researchers" are ready to serve them up as
sashimi thus violating International Trade Laws on hunting endangered
species while a mega-tsunami the size of Mt. Everest materializes out of
the deep blue waters from no where and gushes to shore in leaps and
bounds like a dancing pantomimer,, who undergoes a miriculous spiritual
awakening of discovering the gift that he actually has a voice as he
performs over a trampaline above an open flame broiler,, sweeping
everything in its path out to sea reminding me of an expensive delux
hypo-allergenic vacuum cleaner with all the fancy gadgets including a
hepa-filter which was built for a man but made for a woman...then, you've
only got a minor detail to worry about).
Oh well, things could have been worse, like a grammatical run-on no-no
that just won't stop and it keeps on going, and going, and going and
going which will piss the hell out of your hyper-critical English
teachers who personally lack creative imaginations of their own but try
to teach creative writing anyway. ;-)
Peace
