Chinese surname HONG

Chinese surname HONG (¬õ)
Hong means : red.
The surname Hong is about 1800 years old.

In 5AD Wang Mang (¤ý²õ), who was the commander-in-chief of the armed
forces of the Han Dynasty (º~´Â 206BC to 220AD), murdered Liu Kan (¼BЫ)
the Emperor and installed Liu Ying (¼BÀ¦), a distant relative of Liu Kan,
as the ruler of the Han Dynasty. Whereas Wang Mang proclaimed that he was
the pretended Emperor.

In 9AD Wang Mang dismissed Liu Ying as the ruler of Han and established
his own Dynasty called Xin Dynasty (·s´Â). He crowned himself as the first
Emperor of the Xin Dynasty (9AD to 23AD).

Xin Dynasty was destroyed by Liu Xiu (¼B¨q) in 23AD. Thus Liu Xiu revived
the Han Dynasty which was known as Later Han Dynasty (ªFº~´Â 25AD to
220AD). Liu Xiu was crowned as the Emperor. Emperor Liu Xiu not only
awarded the heritable title of Hou («J) or Marquis to his relative called
Liu Fu (¼B´I) but also appointed him to administer a district called Hong
(¬õ in the southwest region of present day Xiao Xcounty ¿½¿¤ in Jiangsu
province ¦¿Ä¬¬Ù). Liu Fu was known as Hong Hou Fu (¬õ«J´I). After the
death of Hong Hou Fu his eldest son inherited the title which was later
passed down to his eldest grandson. However, the great grandson of Liu Fu
had no male inheritance and the title was abolished by the Han Court.
Other than this great grandson who had no son Liu Fu also had other
offspring and some of them adopted HONG as thir surname in remembrance of
the district Hong.

The surname Hong originated in an area referred to as Ping Chang
Prefecture (©÷¥°p) during the Han Dynasty. The present day location of
Ping Chang Prefecture is in southeast region of Ping Chang county near
Beijing city ¥_¨Ê¥« in Hebei province ªe¥_¬Ù)
