Chinese surname GUO (to Sam)

Hello Sam,

Your surname in pinyin is GUO
In Hakka and Cantonese it is KOK or KWOK.
QUEK is in Hokkien
KUO ...?
KUOK..?

Chinese surname GUO (³¢)
Guo means: second wall of a city.
The surname Guo is about 2600 years old.

After Zhou King Wu (©PªZ¤ý) had founded the Zhou Dynasty (©P´Â 1134BC to
256BC) he gave the authority to his uncle, his father's younger brother,
Ji Zhong (®V¥ò), to rule a district called Guo (ç~ present day northeast
of Ying Yang county âl¶§¿¤ in Henan province ªe«n¬Ù). Zhou King Wu also
bestowed upon him the hereditary title of Gong (¤½) or Duke. District Guo
was renamed as the State of Guo (ç~°ê) and Ji Zhong came to be known as
Guo Gong (ç~¤½). Ji Zhong's offspring continued to rule the State of Guo.

In 771BC, the Quan Rong (¤ü¦¥), a nomadic tribe in the northwest, attacked
and overran the Zhou capital of Hao (Âî present day Xi An ¦è¦w city in
Shaanxi province ÔE¦è¬Ù). Zhou King You (©P«Õ¤ý reign 781BC to 771BC) was
killed in the turmoil. The Quan Rong razed the capital to the ground.

Ji Yi Jiu (®V©y¦Ý), the crown prince and son of Zhou King You, raised an
army from several vassal States and went to rescue the capital. The Jiang
Rong were driven out of the capital and pushed back to the northwest
region, where they belonged.

Ji Yi Jiu ascended to the throne as Zhou King Ping (©P¥¤ý). He moved his
capital to Cheng Zhou (¦¨©P present day Luo Yang ¬¥¶§ city in Henan
province) because the destroyed capital was uninhabitable.

His cousin Ji Jue Tu (®V±¸¬ð), helped Zhou King Ping in defeating the
Jiang Rong. Ji Jue Tu also assisted Zhou King Ping to shift his capital to
Cheng Zhou. In appreciation Zhou King Ping rewarded him the rulership of
the State of Guo because the State of Zheng, which he inherited from his
father Ji You (®V¤Í), near the old capital of Hao, was absorbed by the
State of Qin (¯³°ê present day Feng Xiang county »ñµ¾¿¤ in Shaanxi
province). Zhou King Ping forced Ji Xu (®V§Ç), the ruler of Guo, to give
up his domain in favour of Ji Jue Tu. All the rulers of the vassal states
were unhappy to see Zhou King Ping deprived the of Ji Xu by force. The
ruler of the State of Chu (·¡°ê present day Jiang Ling county ¦¿³®¿¤ in
Hubei province ´ò¥_¬Ù) was so angry with Zhou King Ping that he threatened
to attack the new capital. Seeing troubles lying ahead of him and to
pacify the anguish of the vassal states, Zhou King Ping reinstated Ji Xu,
the former ruler of Guo, by giving him the rulership of another district
called Yang Qu (¶§¦± in the north of present day city of Tai Yuan ¤Óì in
Shanxi province). The new feud of Ji Xu was named as the State of Bei Guo
¥_³¢°ê). Ji Xu changed the character of Guo (ç~) to Guo (³¢), with the
same pronunciation. Ji Xu came to be known as Bei Guo Gong (¥_³¢¤½) or the
Duke of North Guo.

The offspring of Ji Xu continued to rule Bei Guo until in 655BC when it
was absorbed by the State of Jin (®Ê°ê present day Yi Cheng county Ál«°¿¤
in Shanxi province). The ruler of Jin was Ji Gui Zhu (®V¸Þ½Ñ) who ruled
Jin from 676BC to 651BC. The offspring of Ji Xu adopted GUO (³¢) as their
surname in remembrance of their beloved extinct State.

The surname Guo originated in an area referred to during the Qin Dynasty
(¯³´Â 221BC to 207BC), as the Tai Yuan Prefecture (¤Óì°p). The present
day location of Tai Yuan Prefecture is in the area near the city of Tai
Yuan in Shanxi province (¤s¦è¬Ù).
