Sherman and Taiwan

Hi Sherman,

Why not give the newly elected leader of Taiwan, Chen Shui Bian, a
chance to see whether he will lead Taiwan towards unification with China
or Independence? As you know, past rhetorics by politicians don't mean
anything once they get elected. They have to face realities and not
empty words. Mr. Chen had already made a move in the right direction by
suggesting direct links between the Mainland and the offshore islands
controlled by Taiwan.

Remember President Nixon, R.I.P., was quite an anti Communist hawk in
his early days in politics, but once he became President in 1972, he
quickly realised that the war in Vietnam was futile and he ended it in
1973 and normalised relations with North Vietnam after the two Vietnams
reunified.

As for my thirteenth cousin, Lee Teng Hui, whatever his motives were, he
is no longer in power, even in the KMT. Think of him as a stop gap or
stepping stone in the vast history of China.

Be cool,

Clem
