Canadian Hakka

This is the gist of a report on Canadia Hakka by Xiong Huan Hao ( 熊桓浩)
to the 15 th World Hakka Convention held in Malaysia on 4/11/1999 to
7/11/1999. The population of Canada is about 30 million. The Chinese
population is about 900,000 and out of which about 10% of them are Hakka.
In his report Mr Xiong mentioned about the professional businesses of the
Hakka people. He specially referred to the medical profession and in which
he is surprised to find that about 70% of the Hakka doctors are Meixian
Hakka. Many of them are either the Hakka immigrants or their decendants
from the countries of South Africa and Mauritius.

In Canada there is a major daily Chinese newspaper called Xing Dao Ri Bao
(星島日報) owned by Dr Hu Xian (胡仙博士).

On the 7th of October 1999 a Hakka woman by the name of Wu Bing Zhi
(伍冰枝) was appointed as the 26th Governor General of Canada. The 
sister-in-law of Wu Bing Zhi was appointed in 1998 as the first Chinese
Senator in Canada. Dr Wu Wei Quan (伍衛權醫生), the elder brother of Wu
Bing Zhi, was awarded the Order of Canada in 1999. Their father Wu Ying
Cai (伍英才) is 92 years old who was from Tai Shan (台山) in Guangdong
province (廣東省)
