The first arrival of Hakka in the south
The first arrival of Hakka in the south
In 246BC Ying Zheng became the ruler of the State of Qin. He had a vision
that one day he would conquer all the other States in the land and unite
this vast land into one big empire. He began to implement his plan as soon
as he became the ruler. In 224BC Ying Zheng dispatched an army of 600,000
strong, under the command of General Wang Jian, to conquer the State of
Chu (the capital was in present day Jiang Ling city in Hubei province).
General Wang Jian not only subjugated the Chu but also conquered the vast
territory from the south of the Yangtze River to the sea coast of present
day Guangdong province (Bai Yue). General Wang Jian moved his army
eastward and occupied the present day provinces of Fujian, Zhejiang and
Jiangxi.
After having subjugated all the other states Ying Zheng established the
Qin Dynasty (221BC to 207BC). He divided his empire into 36 Prefectures
and later increased to 41. Present day Guangdong province was under the
Prefecture of Nan Hai. Present day Fujian province was named as Min Zhong
Prefecture.
Ying Zheng died in 210BC and the Qin Dynasty collapsed in 207BC. The
600,000 troops from the North did not go back to their homelands in the
north but settled down in the south. Many of them were what we now called
Hakka.
