re: Is Louie a Chinese Name?
Charles Louie,
It is concievable that "Louie" is an attempt at romanising the Hakka
sound for one of the surnames in the bag5 ga1 xiang4 (100's of Chinese
family surnames). I think it could well be character which means
'thunder', Lui2.
Dylan.
Steve Fong,
As for getting a surname which sounds Chinese to talk about things
Chinese, this is sheer chauvism which is uncalled for as it certainly
commands no respect. There are European surnames such as Lee, Tong,
Lang, Hugh, Long etc which can appear to seem or sound like Chinese.
There are many people who are not Chinese, but who have made it their
life's work to educate their fellow people about the Chinese way of life
and language.
Zhu Xi was not a copycat of Confucious, but rather someone who expanded
upon his ideas. At the time Zhu Xi was living, China had just suffered
the loss of territory to invaders, and it became introverted. The
government lead by the monarch was seen to have lost favour with Heaven,
and to stabilise the situation, a radical new thinking was needed to
enliven the people, and boost their moral. This came in the form of a
blossoming of Confucian style thought that we still have in common with
folks of other ethnic Chinese backgrounds. What does it matter if Zhu Xi
was or was not Hakka? He is just another name from the past.
Why attack Yue and Min pasts? We haven't yet sorted our Hakka heritage
out yet.
Don't forget Hakka have settled in both GuangDong and GuangXi, Fujian,
and many other places that were listed elsewhere in this forum. Sources
like the one I mentioned about population movement earlier (by Mark
Elvin) showed that the depopulation of the North and massive increase in
households when the North of the Song territory was lost, indicated that
people must have fled southward to occupy the very areas that Hakka are
found in today, though that does not mean each and every of these were
Hakka folk.
Steve, you do us all a disservice when you single out groups of people
to abuse.
Dylan.
