Re: hakka: Other Hakka Websites
Hi Craig,
Sorry it's taken so long to reply to your inquiry! I've been away from my
mail for a while.
My parents are also from Jamaica. I took some Chinese History courses in
university and was doing some research on the the large overseas Chinese
migration during the nineteenth century. In terms of academic sources about
the Chinese (Hakka) who migrated to Jamaica, there is really very little out
there. I've checked for websites myself to no avail! There is a book,
however, that was put out (partly in English and partly in Chinese) by a
fellow named Lee Tom Yin in the 1950s (or 60s). Quite appropriately, it is
called "The Chinese in Jamaica." If you inquire within your family/extended
family, perhaps someone might have a copy of it. Since the Chinese
community on the island was (and still is) small and one of the older
members of your family is bound to have hear of the author.
The "Chinese in Jamaica" is a topic that fascinates me immensely. I have
been thinking that I would like to do some graduate work in this area but I
have been sidetracked recently. I'm in China right now (Huizhou, Guangdong)
teaching English at a private kindergarten and primary school. Huizhou is
about two hours from the area that my grandparents (on both sides) are from.
I am hoping to go and visit the ancestral "stomping ground" one day soon,
when I have a bit of free time.
Anyway, I hope I have been some help.
Hilary Chance :)
P.S.: Just to let you other "Hakka Netters" know, I'm fine and I'm having a
great time out here. At the school, there are several members of the staff
who are Hakka in origin. In terms of speaking the language, my Hakka is
still rather limited (I'm sorry to say!) but my Putonghua has improved
immensely. I will have to be more diligent about learning the "home
dialect" in the future.

Hi Mr. Dylan,
I was wondering if you know of any Hakka websites regarding the
Hakka migration from China to the Carribean Islands. My parents are
Chinese born in Jamaica. Many of my relatives were born there and all
were Hakka. Do you know of any website regarding Chinese (Hakka)
Jamaican websites? I have searched many times, but have yet to come up
with anything. Thanks.
Craig Lyn
