re: Hakka future
Dear Chow-ming:
I like your ideas very much.
To wrtie Hakka in alphabets is possible but rather very difficult at
present time. I try to write the Hakka in alphabets one article a time in
the newsletter
(http://home.i1.net/~alchu/hakka/hakkafa1.htm). Only very few people can
understand
them because of many reasons. One of them is the significant difference in
Hakka among
different areas. Secondly, Hakka people are much more conservative. People
don't like the
changes. In Taiwan, Hoklo (Fuchian, Hokkien) language in alphabetes has
been rather
popular before. There are quite few books written and published exclusifely
in alphabets.
There are at least one BBS group are communicating in Hoklo by alphabets
exculsively.
To establish an independent Hakka country will also be very difficult. It
is only remotely
possible in China or Taiwan, I think. In China, Hakka people are 3.6% of
totoal
population (ie more than 40 millions, more than some major countries in
Europe). In Taiwan, Hakka are about 10-15% (ie. 2.2-3.3 million, if based
on Hakka language speaking capability, it will be much much lower). In
addition, they concentrate in certain areas. When the Hakka people live
with other ethinic groups together in same comunity in small areas such as
Singapore, I don't think it is possible.
This is my 2 cents worth of thoughts
Thanks
Jen-yih(Albert) Chu
