Dear Buzz:
Greetings from Australia.
Thanks very much for your interest in Changting.
There are two possible ways going to Changting from Fuzhou:
1. Take a train from Fuzhou to Longyan (I forgot how long it takes,
could be 5 to 10 hours), then take a bus or hire a taxi to Changting
(it takes only 2.5 hours.)
2. Take a bus to Xiamen, the second largest city in Fujian province
(3-4 hours). Then take a bus to Longyan (3-4 hours). Then take a
bus or hire a taxi to Changting.
A round trip of taxi from Longyan to Changting is about 300-500 yuan
(US$40-60). The distance is about 170km. It would be as good to
take a bus but with less cost (40-50 yuan). There are a dozen of
buses going between Longyan and Changting, so it is quite convenient.
I would not recommend driving from Longyan to Changting because of
the mountains.
You may take one path to Changting and the other back to Fuzhou,
just to see more places.
I can not say that the facilities for tourists in Changting are
great since there are few overseas tourists going to Changting.
You may seek help from the local government's foreign office (Wai4
Shi4 Ban4 Gong1 Shi3 in pinyin). You may stay in Changting Hotel
(Changting Bin'guang).
It would make your trip more enjoyable if you can find a English
speaking local guide. (One example would be a high school English
teacher.)
Please do not hesitate in letting me know if I can be of further
help.
Enjoy your trip and all the best.
