Re: > Hakka Dialect and Other Topics FAQ - Excellent Idea!
Hi Nam and Hakka Folks,
Hoping that you were addressing me in this message, I thank you for visiting the
page, and expanding my ego! On reflection it shouldn't be called a FAQ at all,
since almost never does anyone asks any of these questions in the group sadly.
Information page would be more like it :)
If I get time I will have to do some more editing. I'm busy on other things now.
I would like to point all Hakka netters to Professor Marjorie Chan's pages. It
is pack with all the up-to-date issues in Chinese language topics, including
some Hakka links. Its at
http://deall.ohio-state.edu/chan.9/default.htm
There are links to sites for Chinese language viewing software, fonts and a
world of other related stuff. Hours of reading there for the taking.
The are Chinese language forums elsewhere, like the kenyon.edu list. This mainly
concentrates on Mandarin language and the teaching of it. Now and again the
contributors, at the forefront of their subject, venture things like Medieval
Chinese, but these are few and far between.
Some time ago, I was drawing the group's attention to the creation of a
newsgroup for Chinese language topics, which failed to gain enough support. I
doubt there will be another call for such a language forum soon. The proposer
Mike Wright was to create some pages on Chinese language information too. Sadly.
I do not know if this will go ahead. As a non-chinese Min dialect speaker, Mike
wanted for all Chinese language interested folk to contribute.
Recently, Sherman has opened a forum for Hakka dialect discussion, and there is
very little in the way of discussion from our kind there. Perhaps then, no FAQ
is needed, since there are few if any people interested. There aren't enough
readers with queries to make a FAQ, a FAQ, because there are no "frequently"
asked questions.
I wrote the page and updated it when Dr. Lee (I think it was), suggested FAQ's
for varying aspects of Hakka culture. Where are those? Come on folks, do
something! We're disappearing due to our own making.
Dyl.
