Hi ! To You All ,
I am an Old China Hand(1945,46,47) Was Marine Gunnery Sgt for long
time..
Spent some wonder years in Northern China along the great northern
railways lines. Many years ago I could speak Chinese fairly well, and
even today I try to use it when ever I can.
Since I am now retired( not from the military), from my old company, I
spend each day usually once or twice writting around the world to
different friends I have met.
I landed in China in late Sept. l945, right after WW2 ended.. My old
divison (The Sixth Marine Division) and I , had just finished on
Okinawa, and had gone back to Guam..when the war ended.. We were sent to
Tsingtao China(Beautiful seaport in Oct 1945 believe)
Our mission was to guard the railways bridges, and to dis-arm the
Japanese soldiers who were still in Northern China..
Any of you who were living then, now that it was a very interesting time
of life( for me for sure it was , as I was just 17 years olds)
I spent almost all my two and a half years in China, along the railways
lines and up near The Great Wall..I know the names have changed now, but
I remember Shanhiguan(most likely not spelled correctly..but it means"
where The Wall meets the sea")..
Along the railway lines of course there were so many small villages and I
really go to know the average Chinese person, liked them all..
I could go on for pages and pages about those days on the railroad trains
of northern China...have wonderful memories of those years.
Up until about three months ago, I was exchangeing e-mail with two young
Chinese students, things seemed to be great, but lately they have not
written..Maybe they will later, I sure hope so...
I would like to exchange e-mail with any person in China. I promise to
always be respectful.
Right now my nephew is back in China (for the second time) teaching
school in a Chinese University,(With The Peace Corps)..He loves China
also.
Hope to hear from you..Take Care..(GunnyChina1@Juno.com)...don
