It's a bit late getting in on this but I haven't had time to read my mail
for a long while. so I have been downloading it only. What town are u in,
there are a few Chinese schools in the UK. London has a few, Birmingham,
Manchester too. You need to check with your town's Chinese community to find
out about whether your town has one. If nothing else, they may help your
daughter realise and understand her Chinese heritage a bit more and provide
her with Chinese friends her own age.

FYI, I was born and raised in an English town and came to Hong Kong when I
was 23. I have met many "BBC's" over here, and a few have been sheltered and
isolated away from Chinese culture in the UK and are less inclined to want
to associate with "BBC's" let alone locals. Many of us learned a little
about chinese culture and made alot of friends in Chinese school - we didn't
particularly enjoy class but it has probably helped us with our identity and
friendships. In Hong Kong BBC's who meet in HK can joke about it, and often
we know someone related or a friend of someone we went Chinese school with.

Steve,

You can click on the highlighted "Asiawind" word and follow the leads to go
to the Hakka homepage I have. It is mostly in English. It has some resources
on tapes and videos to learn Hakka. The same bookstores might also have
Cantonese too. I think the Chinatown in London might have some also. It is
not easy to keep the language alive in a foreign country. We are all trying
very hard. But at least keep the culture and tradition. I am also including
the maillist and forum address in the Cc so you can join us in the
discussion. Hopefully other Hakka in UK can help you too.

SL Lee
