Hello Dixie
Hello Dixie,
Hakka surname LOO is also Chinese surname No.167 Lu2.
Lu2 means : a Chinese surname; black colour.
e.g. Lu2 Bi3 means : Rupee the Indian currency.
I heard that Lee Kuan-yew's mother is a noyna and his father a Hakka
from Taipu. According to your explanation Lee Kuan-yew is not a peranakan
but a Chinese Hakka.
I can still remember, long time ago, I read something about a Mr Tay
(Zheng4 in Mandarin), whose ancestors came from Fujian about a century
ago, claimed that he was a Queen's Chinese. Actually he was a Baba or a
Chinese Hokkien by birth. Mr Tay was a devotees of British rule in Malaya.
Mr Tay was so loyal to the Briish that he spoke about it all day, and
dreamed of it at night. He loved the British Royal family so much that he
wept when "God Save the Queen" was played. He always carried a book where
he pasted cuttings from the local newspapers about the British Royal
family going back for more than three decades. Mr Tay ambition was to
obtain a M.B.E. or Member (of the Order) of the British Empire.
One day Mr Tay did something wrong and he was kicked by a British police
officer. Blaming himself for being kicked by a representative of the
British Royal family Mr Tay apologized to the British police officer for
kicking him. I don't remember the ending.
