I believe many of the triads in the old days have many Hakkas. Being poor,
the Hakkas have probably joined the triads to make a living.

In the failed 2nd attempt to overthrow the Qing court, Sun Yatsen had
depended on his close and good friend,  Zheng Shiliang, who is a triad
member and a Hakka. Zheng led  thousands of triad members in flighting a
number of battles against the Qing soldiers.
The triad members are mostly from Huizhou (if I don't remember wrongly).
