Hi,
I think singling out Hakka men as wifebeaters is a little unfair in the original
question. It is known that some men from all races have, at one time or another,
have beaten their wife. Then again, there are men who are dominated by their
wives and hence henpecked. This sort of question, IMHO, is in bad taste.
It also has to be said that women will leave their husbands if they cannot
provide for them, or that they feel their relationship has not worked. They move
on and their marriage becomes nulled after the passage of time, and they remarry.
My parents know of a number of women who have done just that, and these women
would be in their seventies now. So its not a modern feminist thing, but
something which is, for the women concerned, a sensible thing to do if they have
married into a poor lifestyle.
Unfortunately, there are relatively few (if any) female voices with any Hakka
background to comment on such things here in the Forum. I think we'd all value
another social perspective to the Hakka connundrum.
Dylan.
