Excerpt from Liu Sam Jia the film.
I was watching the old film Liu Sanjie a couple night ago. It was the night
before the singing match, she sang her explanation of why she should sing
as
°Ûºq¤£°Û¼~·T¦h Cong4 go1 bud5 cong5 yiu1 seu2 do1
¤j¸ô¤£¨«¯ó¦¨ºÛ Tai4 lu4 bud5 zeu3 cau3 sang3 vo1
¿û¤M¤£¿i¥Í¶Àù× Gong4 dau1 bud5 mo2 sang1 vong2 xiu4
¯Ý½£¤£®¼I¸y¾m Hiung1 tong2 bud5 ten3 boi4 yau1 to2
Without singing there is great sorrow
A great road untravelled becomes overgrown with grass
A steel blade which has not been sharpened soon rusts
A chest which never straightens causes a hunched back
Later, Liu Samjia meets her foes on a boat and enquires after her opponents
names, they speak in riddles.

Being close to the hills, when singing, the hill answers back
Being close to the waters whilst singing, the waters returns the sound
Today at this place of the singing contest, we meet for the first time
By which surnames are you three sirs called?

Surname Tau (grape) you have never seen the grape ripen
Surname Li (plum) you have never seen the plum blossoms bloom
Surname Lo, (*) you've never heard the gong and drums' sound
How the stupid dare to come and sing in this contest!
(*) The name Lo sounds like that of word for a gong.
Obviously taken aback by Liu Sanjie's criticism:
Li :

You songs cannot outnumber mine

>From the bow unto the stern, its full of lyrics!

If you know nothing about singing you shouldn't come!
By the looks of you, are a fool
Hill songs are all sung from the heart
Who ever heard that they need to travel via a boat?
Perhaps, Hakka has a metaphor in the San Go itself...
Dylan...
