Hakka, Xiongnu and outlook
Fellow Hakkas,
I happened to have bought and read the book with "theories" on the
Xiongnu origin of Hakka. Its emphasis of Hakka-not-equal-to-Chinese is
merely to alienate Hakka from the rest of Chinese for a different
political intention. And I believe that is not in Hakka's best
interest, nor any Chinese's best interest. Reading the contemporary
history of China is a heartbreaking experience. No one can deny that
both the Nationalist party and the Communist party made serious mistakes
in modernizing China. However, partisan politics should not be a reason
to fragment China. I believe there is a bright future for Hakkas, be it
on Taiwan island or on mainland, if we can work together harmoniously,
constructively, and cooperatively, rather than neutralizing our efforts
among ourselves. Hakka's homeland will last long after these parties
are gone. But our homeland will not be intact if separated as two or
many countries. While promoting Hakka culture, we should also respect
other ethnic traits and avoid chauvinism.
Just to echo Zinfad's statement, I have mentioned this before, I would
like to see more Hakka businesses involved in supporting this forum and
our website to further our goal. And we will promote them of course. I
am asking all of you again. This little corner is all done out of our
own pocket and time through personal enthusiasm. We need more help
financially and intellectually to sustain the growth.
