Please help me to contact Hakka in Malaysia and Singapore
Hello,
I am an undergraduate student at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo, Japan.
Now I study sociology with my seminar members, and we are now planning to
visit Malaysia and Singapore in this March to look at the current situation
of Asian infomation society.
As I am interested in sociolinguistics, I want to take this occasion to study
"Multilingualism in the Infomation Age".
Infomation society is coming. It is partly represented by Internet or other
information-related technology. How can they affect us?
I think the problem of inter-national language, intra-national language,
intra-ethnic language ,and mother tongue will increase its importance.
I think Hakka people is very sensitive to both new technology like Internet ,and to
traditional culture and values, including language. I came across many Hakka website.
So, when I go there in this March, I would like to visit Hakka people, and ask
some questions, concerning the present situation of Hakka language in both
countries, and advantages and disacvantages of information society for Hakka people
and culture, etc.
Could you let me know or introduce me any Hakka associacion, etc. that would allow me
to vist and meet?
I have already faxed: Singapore Foong Shoon Fui Kuan
The Federation of Hakka Association of Malaysia
but I have not heard from them yet.
tour term:5-9 March in Malaysia
10-14 March in Singapore
the number of persons: about 16 at most
As I have no knowledge of Hakka Language, communication will be necessarily in
English.(though, being Japanese, I can roughly understand the meanings of
Chinese character)
The matter is pressing. I will appreciate any information.
If possible, please email me.
Thank you.
