Hakka Lee versus Hakka Hsu in Taiwan
On November 29, 1997, in Taiwan's local elections for 23 county magistrate
and mayoral seats, the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) led by President Lee
Tenghui, a Hakka, won less seats than the country's main opposition party,
the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) led by Chairman Hsu Hsinliang, also
a Hakka.
The DPP won 12 seats, KMT 8 and the last 3 seats went to independents.
The defeat by the DPP also led to the resignation of KMT's
Secretary-General, Wu Pohshiung, who took personal responsibility for the
defeat. Wu, incidentally, is also a Hakka.
