Re: hakka: The names of the provinces in China -Reply
To clarify the terminology, People's Republic of China has the following
5 autonomous regions under her sovereignty as one nation:
Inner Mongolia
Sinkiang
Ningxia (Muslim)
Guangxi (Zhuang)
Tibet
Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region (SAR), not a province.
The fact that they are not called provinces is not equivalent to being
independent countries. Just like the Indian reservations in US are still
part of the United States.
According to Beijing, Taiwan is a province. But this is of course
controversial. On the other hand, Outer Mongolia (which is People's
Republic of Mongolia and a member of the United Nations, admitted 1961) is
still a province according to some maps published in Taiwan.
In discussion of Hakka and Hakka origin, I believe we should look at
"China" in the historical/cultural sense rather than from contemporary
politics.
