Mao's genealogy book shows Hakka origin
Mao Zedong's ancetry was a Hakka, according to a recent article.
[The following requires Big5 Chinese characters. Remarks in square
brackets are mine]
The following is a translation/abstract of the article in the first issue
of "Truth"英國崇正真報 published by the Hakka Association in Britain (Aug
8, 1997), author unknown:
Librarians have discovered a genealogy book of the "Mao" clan in the
People's University Library genealogy index 中國人民大學圖書館藏家譜目錄.
The book Yun Shan Mao Shi Zu Pu yun 韻山毛氏族譜 was published in 1941,
printed by XiHeTang 西河堂活字印本. Total 15 chapters in 22 books, stored
in 4 boxes. The genealogy book contains biography傳贊, diagram of the
ancetral house祠堂, contracts契文, tomb diagrams墓圖, family ethics家訓,
family rules家規, professions 任事錄, and genealogical trait世系表.
The first generation : Mao2 Ta4i Hua2 毛太華 was a Hakka from
JiSui吉水,Jiangxi江西
Mao Zedong 毛澤東 was the 20th generation.
From the 8th generation, naming follow the genealogical order:
主顯榮朝士，文方運際祥，祖恩貽澤遠世。
In Yuan dynasty ZhiZheng 至正era (1341-1368 AD), The Maos moved from
Jiangxi江西 to Yunnan LanCangJiang 云南瀾滄江, married to Wang王 and had 8
children. The ancestor Mao Tai Hua 毛太華 was a lower rank officer 千戶長
in Zhu Yuan Zhang 朱元璋's army. Zhu was the first emperor of Ming
dynasty.
Ming HongCheng era 洪成(1380 AD), Mao was sent to Hunan. He moved with his
wife, the eldest son Mao QingYi 毛清一 and the fourth son Mao QingSi 毛清四 to
north of XiangXiang 湘鄉 and cultivated in ShaoShan 韶山, owning 400 mu.
Mao QingYi had two sons: YouGong有恭, YouXin有信.
YouGong's sons: Zhen震, Zhan瓚, etc.
YouXin's sons : Chang常, Jian鑒 etc.
Mao QingSi had 3 sons: YouLun有倫, YouZhi有智, YouCheng有誠
YouLun's son: Xiang翔
YouZhi's son: Shen深
In addition there was Mao JinShan金山 at ShiXiang石祥 [unclear origin?]. This
formed the 5 major families:
Zhen 震- eldest
Chang常
Jian鑒
Shen深
QuanShan全山
Zhen -> ZhuQi竹溪, BinQi彬溪, JieQi介溪
[The above naming could be Zi and not Ming, so does not seem to follow the
naming order.]

SiPu 思普(18th generation), Mao Zedong's grandfather [EnPu 恩普﹖]
YiChang 貽昌(19th generation) Mao Zedong's father
Zedong 澤東(潤之)(20th generation)
