Was Zhu Xi a Hakka?
I quoted from Hakkaology #2 (published by Shanghai People's Press) p.11:
"Zhu Xi of Song dynasty has an ancestry in Henan. He later set up a school
in WuYiShan, Fujian. He became a true Hakka later. "
The definition can become vague with time.
Another example was Li Ka Shing, whose ancestry was supposed to be Hakka.
After settling for generations in Chau Zhou, his family became Chau Zhou.
Sun Yat Sen's ancestry was at Zhi Jin county (which is mostly Hakka).
After moving to Xiang Shan (named Zhongshan after him), the family spoke
mostly Cantonese (with Zhongshan accent). However, Sun Yat Sen also could
speak Hakka, especially when he was recruiting among Hakkas.
