Hakka Forum

I came across this forum while surfing the net. It is amazing to get
such alot of information about the Hakkas. I am a Hakka, both my
parents are Hakkas, they were born in Batu Arang, Malaysia. My
grandfather left his village, Kon Lan Thien Poy, in Bao On (Bao An
County) near to Shenzhen. He identified himself as a Doong Kon Hak
(Dongguan).

I visited the village in 1993 when I was based in Hiong Kong with the
New Zealand Consulate General. I found out that my great grandfather
was the village teacher, the inhabitants of the village had Kong (Jiang
as in river) as their surname. The oldest inhabitant of the village
was able to recite the generation names of the Kongs. I have not done a
genealogy investigation as to the origins of the Kongs but will
endeavour to do while I am in China.

Although born in Malaysia, I have immigrated to New Zealand and
presently serving in China at the New Zealand Embassy as a member of the
New Zealand Foreign Service. It has been great to read your views and
information about the Hakkas. I am certainly looking forward to
visiting Xian where historically we originated.

I have not met too many Hakkas here in Beijing, the only one so far is a
chap originally from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah but now an Australian citizen
and the other, a fellow clansman from Hong Kong but now unable to speak
the dialect. I t is great to be able to participate in this forum and I
look forward to getting more information about the Hakkas.
