My answers to SL Lee's question :

1. Honestly, besides speaking Hakka, I really not sure what is Hakka 
culture. I grew up in Malaysia, and all my parents, grandparents, relatives,
 neighbours speaks Hakka. Maybe it is because my family has not followed 
strictly to "Hakka culture". To me, we are not much different from my 
cantonese or fu-jian friends, except when that the fu-jian and teochew 
practises "pai tian gong" during the Lunar New Year. My wife is teochew. 
That is why I joined this discussion group.

What is Hakka spirit ? There seemed to be a common trend between my 
grandfather, father and myself. My mother's father (grandfather or 
"chia-kong") comes from Jitra in Kedah (North Malaysia) to make his fortune 
in Seremban (Central Malaysia) in rubber plantation. My father left home 
after my birth (i am the eldest) to Kuantan(North East Malaysia), then 
Johor (South Malaysia) and finally Sabah (East Malaysia) to find his 
fortune. And I left Seremban to Singapore to make my fortune. My conclusion 
is, Hakka is a mobile people who don't mind travelling as long as we there 
is an opportunity to "survive" or work.

I think the current discussion on the Singapore conference raises some 
interesting issues. It might be interesting to ask and answer the 
following questions ourselves:

1. How do we feel or think Hakka culture and Hakka spirit are? How is it
similar to (or distinct from) the original Han culture?

2. Do we feel that ALL Hakka traditions need to be preserved (this might be
flame inviting), and whether we need to expand on the original concept of
Hakka culture in the modern world? Are Hakkas merely parochialists
(regionalists, xenophobists, nationalists, conservationists...) concerned 
about Hakka's own interest and survival? 

This would be important for what and how we define as survival of Hakka.
I would like to take a pool of our netters and summarize the result.
