Speaker Helen Zia The
Keynote is a yearly event that recognizes a current Asian American working on an
Asian American issue that inspires, educates and brings to consciousness about
what is happening within Asian American and Asian heritage for the OSU campus
and greater Community. This
year the Asian Pacific American Heritage is award-winning journalist and
contributor editor of Ms. Magazine Helen Zia. A second generation Chinese
American, Zia has been a feminist activist for more than two decades on social
justice issues, and has long been active in the Asian American civil rights
movement. Ms. Zia will speak on the legacy of Vincent Chen and its relationship
to the tragic events on September 11, 2001 and its effects on Asian Americans
across the nation. Helen
Zia is a co-author, with Wen Ho Lee, Of My Country Versus Me, published in 2002.
This book reveals what happened to the Los Alamos scientist who falsely accused
of being a spy for China in the "worst case since the Rosenbergs." She
is also the author of Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American
People, published in 2000. Helen is a graduate of Princeton University's Woodrow
Wilson School of Public and International Affairs where she was a Woodrow Wilson Scholar and a member of the university's first graduating class of women. She
is a staunch supporter of the Asian American Movement and outspoken on issues
ranging from gay and lesbian issues and women's rights and countering hate
violence. Her essays and reviews have appeared in Ms., New York Times,
Washington Post, The Nation, Essence, San Francisco Focus, A. Magazine, The
Advocate, Curve, Out!, Social Policy, Sojourner, Arizona republic and many more. Contact:
