Mandarin Songs
不了情 Bu Liao Qing
This was a very, very popular song in the early 1960s.
It was sung in the movie entitled 不了情 by Linda Lin Dai
but the song was sung by Koo Mei (顧媚 Gu Mei in Mandarin).
It is an unforgettable song to me. I was still studying in Australia when
I first heard it.

There was a really sad story behind this song that became very popular among
Malaysian students. A Miss Tan from Penang transferred from Melbourne to
Perth to study in the same Uni with us. Malaysian boy students could not
understand why all the Malaysian girl students were so friendly to her after
all Miss Tan was only a new student from Melbourne.
A few months later the local newspaper carried a piece of news that Miss
Tan a Malaysian student returned to Penang to die of cancer without telling
her parents that she was going to die when she was first admitted to the
hospital. Only then that the Malaysian girl students told us that every
night the girl students took turn to stay with Miss Tan helping her to pray
to Buddha for protection until she returned to Penang to die.
Miss Tan had a Malaysian boy friend in Melbourne before she came to Perth.
Miss Tan did not tell her boy friend that she had cancer and was about to
die. She gave her boy friend the record (45 turns) of this song "不了情
Bu Liao Qing" and came to Perth without telling her boy friend but left
words to her good friend to tell her boy friend that she was going to Perth
to study.
Only after her death that her boy discovered that she had cancer. The sad
story of Miss Tan was exactly like the story in this movie "Bu Liao Qing".
