I don't suppose you know the word stereotype.

All blacks can play sports well and can dance well.
All Irish have quick tempers and drink a lot of alcohol.
All jews are good with money and business.
All italians are mobsters and love pasta.

Well guess what. All of these have a basis. They are also not true for every member of their group. There are good and bad in every group.

And please.......... Drop the "I am offended" schtick.

This forum is helping us to understand each other, and understanding is key in better relations between individuals, families, and countries.

Sometimes we will make mistakes in trying to learn and understand each other. For example:

A polish co-worker was so shocked that my race could tan that he pulled me to different offices showing everyone my tan lines from my wrist watch.

A jewish co-worker walked past me and called me a very offensive and insulting word. The kind you must fight him over. I stayed calm. I later discovered that he is a brilliant scientist who suffers from turrets syndrome.

While in China, a man was shouting at my wife. In America this is very offensive, and the situation required that I beat him. I could not understand what he was saying, but I was very angry that he was shouting at her. I calmed myself. I later asked her what he was saying. He said he was the hotels owner. The muffins were cold, and if we wanted them warmed, just ask the waitress. He was from the province of Canton. They tend to shout in normal conversation.

In America, my wifes mother needed aspirin. I brought the American version. It was 300mg per dose. It made her sick. We discovered that because of her asian diet and lifestyle, she needed a 25mg dosage. I went out and found it.


I think you get the idea. But inter-cultural relations are not for the closed-minded. You must be very open-minded, and willing to accept the differences in people. Even their mistakes in trying to understand.
