Long-range hedonism as a salve for a sense of deep resignation - the solution?

Coyote, you said:

" You are a rare breed. A business man with an o' so sharp philosophical grasp on things, honed not in the classroom but in between life's transactions. In our world of mirrors, bright lights, false hopes and eventual heartaches, what else is there? Fun... true fun... not the short-sighted induglence that leads inevitably to ruination of the senses, but the sort of fun which may lead to, hopefully, joy. My son wants me to tell him what I think would be best pursuit for him in the University. I steadfastly refuse to be drawn. I said if mathematics pleases you, do that, if science satisfies, do that. I yield what I am willing to give in terms of direction: cultivate that which leaves you joyeous, the rest is secondary. "

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why all that resignation? False hopes and eventual heartaches?

So no short-range hedonism (drug abuse, alcohol, late-night partying and the stuff that leads to the 'ruination of the senses'), but long-range hedonism, the stuff that leaves you truly joyous, as a substitute?

Your implication being that, if the world were not so full of 'bright lights, false hopes, and eventual heartaches', then there would be something other than the cultivation of that which 'leaves you joyous' ?

Joy maybe defined as a sense of fulfillment at having found, or arrived. It also means recognizing certain externalities as "bright lights, false hopes or eventual heartaches", in short - illusions. These things they keep us in perpetual motion, cause us to be forgetful of the fact that we have already arrived, and in truth there is really nowhere to go but where one is. When joy comes, nothing has to change, one may continue our various pursuits (for love, knowledge, wealth etc.) Yet nothing is the same again. If a youth is able to gain a measure of such equanimity, will not his pursuit, whatever it maybe, be less defiled by fear or greed and be more pure-of-heart?

I guess what you say makes sense. Thanks for your fresh perspective.

When I lived in Miami, I met a man who was a furniture refinisher and body builder.

It came to me that he had had so much sex it had become a blur to him. His eyes had a sort of dazed look.

My opinion on this would not count for anything except that my brilliant lawyer friend, the committed bachelor dedicated to romantic pursuit on several continents, also agreed with me about this man.

When the faces and names of sex partners become a blur it is too much of a good thing. Everything in moderation.
