Coyote, you said:
" You are a rare breed. A business man with an o' so sharp philosophical grasp on things, honed not in the classroom but in between life's transactions. In our world of mirrors, bright lights, false hopes and eventual heartaches, what else is there? Fun... true fun... not the short-sighted induglence that leads inevitably to ruination of the senses, but the sort of fun which may lead to, hopefully, joy. My son wants me to tell him what I think would be best pursuit for him in the University. I steadfastly refuse to be drawn. I said if mathematics pleases you, do that, if science satisfies, do that. I yield what I am willing to give in terms of direction: cultivate that which leaves you joyeous, the rest is secondary. "

Why all that resignation? False hopes and eventual heartaches?
So no short-range hedonism (drug abuse, alcohol, late-night partying and the stuff that leads to the 'ruination of the senses'), but long-range hedonism, the stuff that leaves you truly joyous, as a substitute?
Your implication being that, if the world were not so full of 'bright lights, false hopes, and eventual heartaches', then there would be something other than the cultivation of that which 'leaves you joyous' ?
