just a few months away until launch date. folks at jiuquan at working overtime.

hey harley how many taikonauts do you think will be riding SZ-5??? speculations are plenty from 1-3 will make the maiden voyage.

my guess is that 2 taikonauts will take that first trip to space onboard SZ-5. what about you?

My bet:

For the "RESEARCHES" involved and for "MUTUAL TAIKONAUT SUPPOPRT", it will IMHO be a full load (3). If I'm mistaken, SZ-V was designed for three so: Why waste all that valuable time, space, and expenditure when we can all have a party up there???

One thing I do wonder however and which was never mentioned: Will the Taikonauts get to walk in space, or is SZ-V even designed for that? I know that safety provisions has been implemented and that an escape route is availble for the Taikonauts if something does go wrong which leave me to speculate that Taikonauts might indeed be able to make in and out excursion from the modules, regardless if space walks are part of the SZ-V agenda...

Hope! always hold up our hope!!!

Be thankfull, my friend, because we could be in the same boat these people are if this SARS thing took hold:

At the very least, we are on track!!!

yes its been widely reported that the SZ craft is designed to accomondate up to 3 taikonauts.

so the speculation is how many would take part on it's maiden voyage, SZ-5. your guess of 3 taikonauts is a good one. i personally like to have 3 dudes onboard that history making special flight. a grand old party in space!

some folks think it will be 1 taikonaut because the chinese have always been very conservative in endeavors like these. prefering to take small steps at a time. so if there were to be an accident, china would not lose too many taikonauts. remember taikonauts are a very precious commodity, for a nation of 1.2 billion, we have only trained about 12 of them so far.

but my own guess of 2 taikonauts onboard SZ-5 is also based on the conservative nature of the chinese space program. it is far more safe to have 2 taikonauts onboard in case some 'emergency' situation occurs. for instance if 1 taikonaut has a medical situation the other can take over. or if a technical problem occurs there will be 2 onboard to handle it. so for saftey reasons 2 seems ideal.

but if the chinese do decide to send 3 onboard it's maiden voyage that would mean they are pretty damn confident & ready to rock & roll! hehehe..

from what i've read so far, spacewalking is indeed planned very soon after they did spaceflight. after a few more launches of SZ-6, SZ-7, SZ-8 the next thing to master is space docking of 2 vehicles. they will launch 2 SZ crafts & have their modules dock [connect] & taikonauts will operate in both modules before seperating again. reports indicate that SZ space docking apparatus should be compatible with ISS & russians soyuz capsules [a future visit to ISS???]. after space docking is mastered the next trick to do is space walking where taikonauts would leave their capusule & venture outside. that would be true milestone!

exciting stuff.

Conservative endeavors:

Chinese are also known for making the best of evrything, phil. Meaning: Why let all that money be spent on a single object and a single object only when it can all be had in one shot. Again, my opinion only of course.

In any cases, and if I have a say in it, here's what my crew would look:
A taikonaut (military R&D related), a physicist (various scientific researches), and, an astronomer (astronomy so as to put our team on the same league as those enjoyed by for examples... the hubble team).

There's risk any which way the ball bounces, so why be concerned about it is my mentality? I bet taikonaut(s) themselves would prefer some company on the mission if for no other reason, then as someone to share the joy and excitment of the achievement is nmore than sufficient for such a need and wish.

Yes, I can also appreciate it that the initial mission will probably have two taikonaut on it. But, the cost is the same one taikonaut or a full crew. I am an optimist, phil! I am also a two bird with one stone sort of guy and, I believe in the getting of the best of results for my money. But still and as always -- I miss somehow!!!

Space walk: Well... maybe we are a bit ahead of ourselves on this one. But, my position is that it would not be the first time that man has ever walked in space. The excursion has been proven safe proposition. Space walk is a piece of cake these days and, if the SZ-V is provided for with docking facilities as reported, then it means that it features in's and out previlages.

An old Chinese saying that applies appropriately to this situation, phil:
"A boat, naturally, will align itself with the wharf once it's made berth."

I think this boat is called "desire". And, this wharf is named "commitment", and, when these two collides or are fused together with each other -- then, nothing is impossible...

A while back I read an article that said it would definitely happen before end of this year, 2003. More recent articles said many tests have been conducted successfully. My personally wild guess: 4th quarter of this year.

Some rumors/speculations suggests that...

It'll happen on October 1st which is the Chinese National Day Holiday. The possibility of an October 1st launch is very great my opinion because the launch will be viewed as one of China's greater of feats -- one in the same caliber as that of the Great Wall and Chinese leaders will want it to coincide with some major Chinese Holiday to comemorate it as a major Chinese success story.

We'll see however...

 keep eyes on YW vessels!

Harley,

i think that after the system is fully set up, we will see other types of professional scientists going up to do experiments & look after the equipment in our space lab. for the time being the taikonauts will consists on fighter jet pilots because these first flights will be like a 'test drive'. but we will have a corps of taikonauts from diverse scientific/technical backgrounds soon.

the scientific community in china must be estatic right now! counting down to "D DAY"! oh yeah we will know that the launch date is coming soon when we see china's fleet of 4 YuanWang space tracking ships leave port. so keep our eyes on those 4 YW vessels!
