The origin of Chinese Surname ZHUO (卓)
Zhuo means: high; distinguished; prominent; outstanding.
The surname Zhuo is about 2,500 years old.
The surname Zhuo originated in an area referred to during the Han Dynasty
(漢朝 206BC to 220AD) as the Xihe prefecture (西河郡). The present day location
of Xihe prefecture is in Lishi county (離石縣, 111.8 degree East and 37.2
degree North on the world map) of Shanxi province (山西省).
The people of the State of Chu (楚國 present day Jiangling county 江陵縣
of Hubei province 湖北省) were the descendants of Zhuan Xu (顓頊) who was
the grandson of Huang Di (黃帝) or the Yellow Emperor. They lived in the
area between the Chanhjiang (長江) or the Yangtze River and the Hanshui
River (漢水 the present day Zigui county 秭歸縣 in Hubei province). They,
later, shifted to Danyang (丹陽 the present day Zhijiang county 枝江縣 in
Hubei province). They expanded across the Hanshui River to Huaishui River
(淮水) in the east and annexed several vassal States during the Zhou Dynasty
(周朝 1134BC to 256BC).
In 740BC, Mie Xiongtong (羋熊通) became the 17th ruler of the State of Chu.
In 704BC Mie Xiongtong proclaimed the formation of a new Kingdom to be called
the Kingdom of Chu (楚王國). He titled himself the Chu King Wu (楚武王)
of the Kingdom of Chu adopted XIONG (熊) as his surname. From then on the
surname of all the future rulers was Xiong.
Eleven generations after Mie Xiongtong, in 515BC, Xiong Zhen (熊軫) became
28th ruler of Chu. Xiong Zhen ruled Chu until 489BC. Five years later, in
510BC, the two States of Yue (越國 present day Zhuji county 諸暨縣 in Zhejiang
province 浙江省) and Wu (吳國 present day Wuxi county 無錫縣 in Jiangsu
province 江蘇省) were at war. The State of Yue was desperately in need of
capable and talented men to administer its affairs. Xiong Zhen sent one
of his talented officials called Zhuo Hua (卓滑) to Yue to assist the its
ruler. In 482BC, Zhuo Hua succeeded in helping the ruler of Yue to invade
and overrun Wu.
Zhuo Hua was highly honoured and rewarded by Xiong Zhen. The descendants
of Zhuo Hua were very proud of him and some of them adopted ZHUO (卓) as
their surnames in remembrance of him.
The couplet of surname Zhuo:
姓自楚國,---Xing4 zi4 Chu guo2,
望出西河.---Wang4 chu Xihe.

The Hakka Chinese are sometimes called the "Guest People".
They were a sub-group of the Han Chinese. They lived in Northern China in
the Yellow River basin. Due to the infusion of tribes from the north, flooding,
plaques, droughts, famines and wars drove them en masse to the south.
The local people in the south called these northerners "guest families (客
家)" when they settled in South China.
I hope you read Chinese or understand Mandarin.
I was Chinese educated in Chinese schools.
