等情郎 Waiting for her husband to return
This is a song about a wife waiting for her husband to return. Years ago,
her husband left the ancestral village for Nanyang (南洋Malaya now Malaysia)
to seek for fortune. She must have waited for his return for many long years.
Now she is a bit worry that he might not return at all.
The butterflies are flying in pairs
Bees are playing games in the garden
Mandarin ducks are paired off swimming in the river
My lover has gone to South Sea[1A]
Peach flowers are blooming in every tree
Plum flowers are flourishing fragrantly and beautifully
The swallows have flown back already
When will my lover return.
[*A] South Sea (南洋)
South Sea in this case means Nanyang or Malaysia and Singapore.
