從古英雄成大事,---Cong2 gu3 ying xiong2 cheng2 da4 shi4,
須知半向苦中來.---Xu zhi ban4 xiang4 ku3 zhong4 lai2.
From time immemorial the heroes achieved their heroic deeds,
Mainly through hard work.

從儉入奢易,---Cong2 jian4 ru4 she yi4,
從奢入儉難.---Cong2 she ru4 jian4 nan2.
It is easy to move from thrifty to extravagant,
But it is hard to move from extravagance to thrifty.

粗茶淡飯食到老,---Cu cha2 dan4 fan4 shi2 dao4 lao3,
粗布棉衣著到老.---Cu bu4 mian2 yi zhao2 dao4 lao3.
I drink plain tea and eat simple food until I grow old,
I wear cotton clothes made of coarse cloths until I grow old.

粗話無害,---Cu hua4 wu2 hai4,
甘話無益.---Gan hua4 wu2 yi4
Vulgar language breaks no bones,
Pleasant words butter no parsnips.

村中無虎狗為王
Cun1 zhong wu2 hu3 gou3 wei2 wang2
There are no tigers in the village so the dogs are the kings.

寸金失去容易得,---Cun4 jin shi qu4 rong yi4 de2,
寸陰失去不回頭.---Cun4 yin shi qu4 bu4 hui4 tou2
A lost inch of gold may be found,
A lost inch of time, never.

不義之財,---Bu4 yi4 zhi cai2,
如湯潑雪.---Ru2 tang po xue3.
Ill-gotten wealth,
Is like the soup thrown into the snow.

不飲管他酒價高
Bu4 yin3 guan3 ta jiu3 jia4 gao.
If you do not drink, the price of wine is of no interest.

不知天高地厚
Bu4 zhi tian gao di4 hou4.
Do not know the immensity of heaven and earth.
(Have an exaggerated opinion of one's abilities).

One is not boasting about oneself
And not showing an inferiority complex of oneself
