望月懷遠 Looking at the moon and thinking of someone far away
海上生明月,---Hai3 shang4 sheng ming2 yue4,
天涯共此時.---Tian ya2 [*1A] gong4 ci3 shi2.
情人怨遙夜,---Qing2 ren2 yuan4 yao2 ye4,
竟夕起相思.---Jing4 xi [*2B] qi3 xiang si.
滅燭憐光滿,---Mie4 zhu2 lian2 guang man3,
披衣覺露滋.---Pi yi jiao4 lu4 zi.
不堪盈手贈,---Bu4 kan ying2 shou3 [*3C] zeng,
還寢夢佳期.---Hai2 qin3 meng4 jia qi [*4D].

The explanations in plain Chinese and English
(1) 海上生出明月的光彩來,
The lustre of the moon comes out from the sea,
(2) 全天下都在這個時候可以見到的.
At this moment everywhere under heaven can see it.
(3) 有情的人﹐怨恨著這漫漫的長夜,
Lovers hate this endless night,
(4) 在全夜裏不斷地引起相思.
As the long night will lead them yearning for their lovers.
(5) 因為憐愛著月光的充足, 便吹滅了蠟燭,
As it is a full moon I blow off the burning candle,
(6) 因為看得露水濃起來的了, 便披了一件衣服.
Seeing the dew is so thick I put on a dress.
(7) 但這月光不能捧在手裏送給你,
Since I can't hold this moon in both hands to offer you,
(8) 只得回到房裏去睡覺, 在夢中和你很要好的相會一番罷.
I might as well go to bed and hope to meet you in my dream.
