Chinese idiomatic story (4)

One Drum-beat To Victory
一 鼓 作 氣 (Yi Gu3 Zuo4 Qi4)
Yi means: one
Gu3 means: drum
Zuo4 means: make
Qi4 means : air

During the Spring and Autumn Period (春秋時代 722BC to 481BC) of Zhou
Dynasty (周朝 1134BC to 256BC), in 683BC Jiang Xiao Bai (姜小白), the 15th
ruler of the State of Qi (齊國 present day Lin Zi county 臨淄縣 in Shandong province 山東省) dispatched a large army to attack the State of Lu (魯國 present day Qu Fu county 曲阜縣 in Shandong province). Ji Tong (姬同), the ruler of Lu, led the Lu armed forces to engage the Qi army. Ji Tong was accompanied by Cao Gui (曹劌), a military genius strategy.

Ji Tong and Cao Gui were riding in the same chariot leading the Lu troops to the battlefield. The forces of the two states met at Chang Shao (長勺). They were facing each other in formation and ready to do battle. The Qi forces had beaten
the Lu army in other battles before and they were in contempt of the Lu.army

The ruler of Qi ordered the war drums to be sounded and attacked the Lu.. On hearing of the enemy drums Ji Tong, the ruler of Lu, wanted to response by ordering the Lu soldiers to beat their war drums too, but Cao Gui stopped him
from doing so.
Cao Gui told Ji Tong: "The enemies are in high spirits. We should have patient
and wait."

The attack by the Qi troops were fierce but they could not penetrate the Lu's formation. The Qi troops pulled back.

The Qi sounded their war drums the second time ordering another attack.
They charged against the Lu with a velocity of speed. Yet the Lu forces did not
sound their war drums in reply. Again the Qi could not penetrate the Lu's
defence. Once more the Qi had no other options but to pull back.

The Qi thought that the Lu troops were afraid of sounding their war drums. The
Qi beat their drums the third time. After hearing the enemy war drums the third time Cao Gui told Ji Tong: "Now, it is time to defeat the Qi."

Ji Tong ordered the soldiers to beat their drums. This was the first time
that the Lu had sounded their drums. However, the Qi had already sounded
three times. Knowing that the Lu had failed to reponse to their war drums
twice the Qi troops thought that the Lu troops were not willing to fight.

Upon hearing of their war drums the Lu troops charged forward fiercely and
put the Qi army to rout. The Qi troops were in disarray and fleeing in all
directions.

Immediately Ji Tong wanted to give orders to pursue the enemies. However,
Cao Gui stopped him from doing so. Cao Gui rode to the place from where
the Qi troops had fled. Cao Gui got down from the chariot. He inspected the ground as if he was looking for something. Getting back to the chariot he told Ji Tong:
"Now is the time to pursue."

Ji Tong ordered his troops to go after the fleeing Qi army. They chased the Qi
troops for about thirty lis (three lis = one English mile) and attained a lot of weapons from the fleeding Qi troops.

On the way home, Ji Tong asked Cao Gui:
"Tell me the reasons behind this victory that you could defeat the Qi troops by beating the war drums only once against their thrice?"
Cao Gui replied:
"The main element in battle is courage. When the courage has waned defeat
is the result. When the drums were first sounded the courage of the soldiers was very strong. After the drums were sounded the second time the courage had
waned. At the third sound of the drums the courage was exhausted. When we sounded the first drum the courage of our troops were strong, but the Qi troops
had already sounded their drums three times and the courage of their troops were exhausted. That was why we routed them."

Ji Tong asked again:
"Once the enemies were defeated and fleeing why we did not pursue them immediately?"
Cao Gui replied:
" The State of Qi is a very powerful State and it has a very tricky ruler. I was afraid that they might set up a deceiving retreat and might ambush us if we pursue them immediately. I got down from the chariot to look at the foot prints they left behind. I
found them disarrayed and they were fleeing in disorder. From far I could
see their banners were swaying and trembling to all directions. Some of them
were alredy torn into pieces. After considering all these then we ordered to
pursue."
Ji Tong said:
"Excellent! Excellent! You are really a military strategy genius."

Waiting For A Windfall
守 株 待 兔 (Shou3 Zhu Dai4 Tu4)
Shou3 means: guard
Zhu means: tree
Dai4 means: wait
Tu4 means: rabbit

In 1115BC Ji Song (姬誦) was crowned Zhou King Cheng (周城王), the second
King of the Zhou Dynasty (周朝1134BC to 256BC). The reign of Zhou King Cheng lasted until 1078BC. In 1106BC Zhou King Cheng delegated authority to his younger brother,Tang Shu Yu (唐叔虞) to rule a district called Jin (晉 present day Yi Cheng county 翼城縣 in Shanxi province 山西省). Zhou King Cheng also bestowed upon his brother the hereditary title of Hou (侯) or Marsquis. Tang Shu Yu renamed the district of Jin as the State of Jin (晉國). After the death of Tang Shu Yu his eldest son called Ji Xie (姬燮) succeeded him and inherited the title Hou.

Ji Xie appointed one of his sons, Ji Bi Wan (姬畢萬) to administer a city called Han Yuan (韓原 present day in the southeast of He Jin county 河 津縣 in Shanxi province). Ji Bi Wan renamed the city as the State of Han (韓國) which was absorbed by the State of Jin in 757BC. The offspring of Ji Bi Wan adopted HAN
(韓) as their surname.

In 453BC one of the descendants of Ji Bi Wan became a very powerful general in the Jin Court. His name was Han Qian (韓虔). General Han Qian formed an alliance with two of the most powerful families in the State of Jin: the Zhao (趙) family and the Wei (魏) family. Together they plotted and carved up the State of Jin into three States. They were the State of Zhao (趙國), the State of Wei (魏國) and the State of Han (韓國). General Han Qian established his capital in Yang Di (陽 翟 present day Yu Xian 禹縣 in Shanxi province).

However, the division of the State of Jin triggered a chaotic situation in the land. Wars broke out among the States. The historians referred to this period as the Warring States Period (戰國時代 453BC to 221BC).

In 403BC Zhou King Wei Lie (周烈王), who reigned from 425BC to 402BC , officially recognized the State of Han. In 376BC Han Ai (韓哀) was installed as the ruler of Han (ruled 376BC to 374BC). The following year he conquered and annexed the State of Zheng (鄭國 present day Xin Zheng 新鄭 city in Henan province 河南省). Han Ai shifted his capital from Yang Di to Xin Zheng.

In 272BC Huan Hui Wang (韓桓惠王) became the ruler of the State of Han.
Huan Hui Wang had a younger brother by the name of Han Fei (韓非 280BC
to 234BC). Although Han Fei was born a stutterer, he was not only a great
philosopher but also a author who had written many books and one of them was called Wu Chun (五蠢 Five stupids) which was an idiomatic essay book. This
one was called Shou Zhu Dai Tu (守株待兔):

"Long time ago in the State of Song (宋國 present day Shang Qiu county 商邱縣
in Henan province 河南省) there was a honest and industrious man but he was
not very intelligent. He usually toiled all day long and was contented with his lot as
a farmer.

One day, while he was working in the field, he saw a rabbit running across the
field and it crashed against the exposed roots of a tree growing in the middle of
his farm. The rabbit broke its neck and died. He threw down his tools and went
to pick it up. That evening he had the rabbit meat for dinner.

He thought that life would be much easier if he could just stay in the field and wait for rabbits to crash into the tree.

The next day he stayed off the field and spent the day waiting for another rabbit to appear, but he saw no sign of rabbits.

Day in and day out he did not attend to his field but waited and waited for rabbits
to appear. Soon he was neglecting his farm and the planting season was coming
to an end. But there was no sign of any rabbit coming his way.

The mishap in which the rabbit died was an isolated incident. It became obvious that his future would be bleak if he were to continue to neglect his field. He was trying to get something for free, without working for it, what a wishful thought of obtaining something without an effort."

因釋其耒而守株﹐冀復得兔。

Reunion Through A Broken Mirror
破 鏡 重 圓 (Po4 Jing4 Chog2 Yuan2

Po4 means: broken
Jing4 means: mirror
Chong2 means: again
Yuan2 means: round
(Chong2-Yuan2) means:reunion

During the period of North and South Dynasties (南北朝時代 317AD to 581AD).
China was divided into sixteen Kingdoms. In 581AD, like the First Emperor of
the Qin Dyansty (221BC to 207BC), Yang Jian (楊堅) unified the land what we
now call China into one country. Yang Jian established the Sui Dynasty
(隋朝 581AD to 618AD).

Before Yang Jian conquered the Kingdom of Chen (陳王朝 557AD to 589AD
in present day Southeastern part of China) it was ruled by Chen Ba Xian (陳霸先
whose capital was in Jian Kang (建康 present day Nanjing 南京 in Jiangsu
province 江蘇省).

In 589AD Yang Jian invaded the Kingdom of Chen and his troops were breaking through the Chen's defence and entering the capital. Xu De Yan (徐德言), the husband of princess Yue Chang (樂昌) who was the younger sister of Chen Ba Xian, knew that the Chen Kingdom was about to come to an end. Xu De Yan knew that he and his wife would be separated becauese she was the princess of Chen and she could be arrested by the new ruler. Xu De Yan thought that, once his wife was arrsted, he would never see his wife again. Xu De Yan did not know what to do.
Princess Yue Chang used to look at the mirror and said to herself that she was not beautiful. Many a time she asked her husband,
" Why did you marry me as I am not as beautiful as other girls?.
Did you marry me for fame because I am a princess?"
Xu De Yan would reply that he married her because he loved her.

The troops of Yang Jian entered the Chen capital, Jian Kang, and captured
Chen Ba Xian, the King of Chen. Yang Jian's soldiers were rounding up the
royal members of the Chen Court. and they were on the way to Xu De Yan's
house to arrest the princess. As the soldiers entered his house Xu De Yan and
his wife were in panic. In a great haste she broke a mirror into two pieces. The princess gave him one piece and she kept the other piece by herself. She told her husband that if they ever survive all the perils they would use the two pieces
of this broken mirror to identify themselves as husband and wife.

While the soldiers were entering the house from the front door they escaped through the back door. There were many people in the streets. Some of them
were crying and screamming and many of them were rushing and running
about. Xu De Yan and his wife were trying to stick together but the princess
got lost in the crowd.

With a broken heart and the half piece of the broken mirror Xu De Yan went back
to his village and lived there with his mother. Day and night he was looking at the broken mirror and longing for his wife. He lost his will to live. His mother told him
to remarry but he did not agree with her.

A few years later Xu De Yan decided to go and look for his wife. He travelled northwest to Da Xing (大興, present day Xi An city 西安市 in Shaanxi province
陜西省). Yang Jian had founded the Sui Dynasty and established his capital in
Da Xing which was a long way from Jian Kang. With determination Xu De Yan arrived in Da Xing.

Xu De Yan searched high and low all over the city of Da Xing for his wife. He
had been searching for a long time. He knew that his wife was somewhere in
the city as he heard from friends back in Jian Kang that the Sui authority had transported many the captured maids from the Kingdom of Chen to Da Xing.
His wife could be among the captured maids.

One day, he saw a group of people watching an old man selling a broken mirror
in the market. People thought that he was mad because he was selling it for ten taels of gold. He had been selling it for a long time and yet nobody wanted to buy
a broken mirror for such a price. Day in day and day out people saw him calling out,
" Broken mirror for sale for ten taels of gold".

Curious about the old man, Xu De Yan went near him and wanted to find out what sort of broken mirror he was selling. Xu De Yan was shocked and surprised
to see him selling his wife's half of the broken mirror. He told the old man that he wanted to buy the broken mirror. All the people who were watchimg them burst out laughing and shouting,
"Come and see. Here is another mad man.
He is buying the old man's broken mirror for ten taels of gold".

Xu De Yan asked the old man why was he selling the broken mirror for such a
high price. Xu De Yan showed the old man the other half of the broken mirror.
The old man knew he was the husband of the owner of his broken half of mirror.
The old man told Xu De Yan that a dancer in the hotel paid him to sell the broken mirror in the market every day. The old man said that the dancer wanted him to
sell it for ten taels of gold and whoever wanted to but it must be the husband of her. So the old man took him to the hotel.

True enough, Xu De Yan met his wife, the former Yue Chang princess, in the hotel. Husband and wife were reunited happily. They returned to the south and lived
happily ever after
