A collection of Tang poems

Jiang Nan Chun

水村山郭酒旗風;---Shui3 cun shan guo jiu3 qi2 feng;

Nan Chao si4 bai3 ba shi2 si4,
Duo shao3 lou2 tai2 yan yu3 zhong.
------------------------------------------------------

Spring in the south of Yangtze River

Walking along this road of about three miles one can hear the orioles singing and see the mixture of red and green colour of the forest.
There is also a village close to the water, at the foot of a hill, near
the wall of the city, with a banner of a wine shop fluttering in the wind displaying its liquor.

Looking at this scenery it reminds me of Wu Emperor of the Liang Dynasty
during the period of the North and South Dynasty [1]. More than 480 Buddhist temples were built in the country during his reign.
I wonder how many Buddhist temple buildings are there being hidden by the rain and the smoke.

[1]
Wu Emperor Xiao Yan (武皇帝蕭衍 502AD to 549AD) of the Liang Dynasty (梁
朝 502AD to 557AD) of the Period of the North and South Dynasties (南北朝 420AD to 589AD). Emperor Wu adored Buddhism.

By Du Mu (杜牧 803AD to 852AD)

春思 Chun Si

Ying ti2 yan4 yu3 bao4 xin nian2,
Mayi Longdui lu4 ji qian.

Jia zhu4 Cengcheng lin2 Han Yuan

Ji zhong jin3 zi4 lun chang2 hen4,
Lou2 shang4 hua zhi xiao4 du2 mian2.

Wei2 wen4 yuan2 rong2 Dou che qi2,
He2 shi2 fan3 pei4 lei Yan Ran
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The thought in spring

If you can hear the singing of the orioles and the swallows,
New Year is here.
The frontier fortresses of Mayi[1] and Longdui [2] are thousands
of miles from here.

My house is in Cengcheng [3] which is near the Garden of the Han Palace.
My heart longing for my husband is following the moon to the land of the
Hu[4]

I wove a brocade with the word Jin[5] to represent how I hate our separation.

The flowers growing upstairs are laughing at me for sleeping alone.

I want to ask the great Marshall General Dou[6] when will we achieve victory,

And also if my husband 's name is engraved on the rock in Yanran Hill[7]?

[1]
Mayi (馬邑)
The First Emperor of Qin (秦始皇帝 221BC to 210BC) was building the Great
Wall
when the Great Wall reached a place called Wuchuabsai (武川塞) where there
were horse roaming about. The Qin Government then renamed that place Mayi
meaning Horses Place.

[2]
Longdui (龍堆) was a place in the east of an ancient country called Loulan
in the present day Chuoqiang county (婼羌縣) in Xinjiang province (新疆省
). Currently the country of Loulan is being buried under the desert.

[3]
Legend has it that Cengcheng (層城) was in Mount Kunlun (崑崙山)
where the Heavenly Palace (天宮) was situated.

[4]
Hu (胡) is referring to the non-Han ethnic groups living in the north and
west in ancient times.

[5]
Jin (錦)
Dou Tao (竇滔) was stationed in Xiangyang (襄陽the present day county of
Xiangyang 襄陽縣) in Hubei province (湖北省). His wife was called Su Shi
(蘇氏) who had received no news from him. She was so sad that she wove a
brocade with a big word Jin on it plus more than two hundred poems with
about eight hundred words.

[6]
Marshall Dou (竇元帥) referred to General Dou Xian (竇憲將軍) of the Later
Han Dynasty (後漢 25AD to 220AD).

[7]
Yanran (燕然) was the name of a hill, about one thousand kilometers from
Changan (長安), where General Dou Xian defeated the enemies. He went up
the hill to engrave the names of the victors on the rock.

198. Huangfu Ran (皇甫冉)
He passed the Imperial Examinations during the reign of Emperor
Xuan Zong Li Longji (玄宗皇帝李隆基 713AD to 755AD). He came first in the
examination.
