Shi Naian (施耐庵 1296AD to 1370AD)

The ancestors of Shi Naian were originally from Sugu (蘇姑 the present day city of Suzhou 蘇州市 in Jiangsu province 江蘇省). The Shi family relocated themselves to Xinghua county 興化縣 in Jiangsu province and Shi Naian was born there during the Yuan Dynasty (元朝 1206AD to 1368AD). He passed the Imperial Examination during the reign of Emperor Wen Zong (文宗皇帝 1328AD then 1330AD to 1331AD) and was appointed as an official posted to Qiantang (錢塘 present day city of Hangzhou 杭州市 in Zhejiang province 浙江省). After serving there for a few years he resigned because he did not like the Mongolian Administration. He returned to his hometown in Xinghua county and started writing. He had written many books and the popular ones are, 水滸傳(Shui Hu Chuan which was translated into English as The Water Margin or All Men Are Brothers which is about the adventure tales of the 108 brotherhood rebels against the corrupted officials during the Song Dynasty 宋朝 960AD to 1279AD), 三國演義 (San Guo Yan Yi), 隋唐志傳 (Sui Tang Zhi Chuan), 三遂平妖傳 (San Sui Ping Yao Chuan) and many others.

Shi Naian lived to see the Mongolian Government was overthrown by Zhu Yuanzhang (朱元璋) who established the Ming Dynasty (明朝 1368AD to 1644AD) in 1368AD. He died in 1370AD aged 74.
