Dear Guo and John:
Yes , you have raised an interestig point regarding the King's ethnicity, in thailand ,there are lots of teochews and many have settled in thailand, if i am not mistaken the thais (aboriginal) were originally based in southern china , but due to the influx and expansion of china, the thais had to moved southwards, these include the vietnamese and burmese inhabitants of today. if the founder of the chakri dynasty was from chaozhou, what would his original chinese curname be?pya doesnt sound like chinese surname? by the way, has anyone read the" Lords of the Rim" by sterling seagrave?it talks about the influx and migration of the teochews to thailand. and also it is said that there is an emerald Buddha which only the king of thailand is allowed to pay repsects and to put on special clothing to dress the buddha statute. it is thought to hold mystical powers and the destiny of the chakri dynasty as well as the aperance of the sacred white elephant

One of the ancestor of the present day thai monarch was a teochew who had emigrated to thailand and who had assimilated with the thai population by marrying one of the local thai ladies ,as the chakri dynasty was established in the 18th century, the emigration had taken place before that. i beleive this was due to the unrest of the inccessant war bewteen the Manchu who had conquered the north of china by 1650 and Southern Ming dynasty which had lost southern china by 1660, the influx of the teochews to thailand must have occured during this period

Within the "Wu hu" 5 barbaians invaded China. Di might had some relationship with this issue. Di might be of some relationship with the Yue-Zhi "Torcharian", an Indo-European tribe lived in Northwest China. I remember some one stated this and coroborated this relationship between Yue-Zhi,Di,Nanzhao,and Tailand king.
