睡獅 The Sleeping Lion
In 1900s, the Chinese considered China as a sleeping Lion not a Dragon.
Dragon referred to the Emperor who was the head of the Qing Dynasty (清朝
1644AD to 1911AD).
Bonaparte Napoleon, the French Emperor, once said:
"China is a sleeping Lion. Please don't disturb him. Let him sleep. If you
wake him up the world will regret."
Dr. Sun Yat-sen (孫中山) was not alone in planning to overthrow the Qing
Dynasty (清朝). His revolutionary activities had exerted a tremendous influence
on young intellectuals during the period from 1903 to 1905. In China and
overseas many anti-Qing Government organizations were formed and many revolutionary
books, newspapers and periodicals were published.
Chen Tianhua (陳天華), a 28 year-old intellectual, was from the county of
Xinhua (新化縣) in Hunan province (湖南省). In 1903, he published two books
called " Meng Hui Tou 猛回頭 or Turn your head abruptly." and " Jing shi
Zhong 警世鐘 The world alarm clock", in which there was a poem on anti-Qing
Government and describing how China should be after the revolution:
猛睡獅﹐夢中醒﹐向天一吼;
百獸驚﹐龍蛇走﹐魑魅逃生.
When the sleeping lion wakes up it will roar towards the sky;
All the animals will be frightened. The dragons and snakes will be running.
The demons and monsters will flee for their lives.
改條約﹐復政權﹐完全獨立;
雪仇恥﹐驅外族﹐復我冠裳.
China will change its treaties with the foreign countries, recover its political
power
and become a complete independent country;
Then we will avenge the enmity and insult, expel the aliens, and restore
our national costume.
到那時﹐齊叫道﹐中華萬歲;
才是我﹐大國民﹐氣吐眉揚.
By that time, we will be shouting in unison, "Long Live China";
It will then be a really great country and we will be proud of it.
