China To Grant 20,000 North Koreans Work Visas
Author: Kobo-Daishi
Date:   05-30-12 08:30

Dear all,

The following is a May 28, 2012 article titled "China Gives Work Visas for 20,000 N.Koreans" found at South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper's web site:

China is issuing work visas for 20,000 North Koreans so they can work in three northeastern provinces of Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang. The move comes amid a crackdown on illegal North Korean migrants who typically drift into menial jobs, but a diplomatic source in Seoul said the three Chinese provinces now decided to legally hire 20,000 North Koreans for jobs there in a bid to ease a labor shortage.

A company in Tumen, Jilin Province already hired some 29 North Korean women this month, and another 160 women were also sent there. The press in the three provinces is full of ads looking for North Korean workers.

They will reportedly work in manufacturing and service companies on a work visa, earning on average over US$150 a month, compared to $110 North Korean workers nominally make at the joint-Korean Kaesong Industrial Complex.

Experts speculate that the drive to attract legal North Korean workers aims to provide some breathing space for North Korean regime under new leader Kim Jong-un. Pyongyang is keen to earn hard currency amid continuing international sanctions.

Early this year, Kim was reported as saying that the risk of a few defections is far outweighed by the money overseas workers send home.

The new policy benefits especially small and midsize businesses in China. One hotel in Yanji, for example, has a number of staff with Kim Jong-il badges on their lapels.

Another source based in Seoul said China and North Korea seem to have hit on a way that works for them both, since Beijing wants to stem the flow of illegal North Korean migrants even if they include bona-fide refugees, but at the same time China needs the cheap labor and Pyongyang wants the money.

Good thing China is helping the North Koreans.

I heard they're suffering through a very bad drought and they really need the money. ;-0

Jia you, North Korea, jia you. ;-)

That is the gesture of a good neighbor -- unlike the US mistreatment of the Mexicans -- blaming them as terrorists so the cronies of the presidents to build more fences and to milk the system for more :) And yet not many white Americans are ready to bend over their arse to pick up vegetables like these Latin Americans -- I am all for them to have extra fertility pills so in the next few hundred of years -- they can be taking over all of the America :) It was their land in the first place -- So goes for the Asians in Canada, in England -- and the Palestinians to do likewise inside Palestinian owned land called Israel :)

Apples to oranges. Be real Paul. If North Koreans were flowing into China illegally the way Mexicans enter the USA it would be a real mess.

A far-cry more than 20,000 Mexicans enter the USA every day and work legally anyway.

Are you serious?

You know US propaganda media had been distorting facts and figure all these while.

Do you think the majority of the stupid lazy American ever get a chance to learn anything? Judging from the same mistakes committed again and again......obviously not.

""That is the gesture of a good neighbor""

I admire China for its internationalism, empathy and benevolence even in its hardship. But see how the North Koreans treated the Chinese fishermen working within Chinese territorial water. I wonder what games are they playing.

Dear all,

I remember reading where farm owners want a guest worker program in place so that Mexicans can help them to get their crops in and out to market.

I also read where there is a guest worker program in place in border towns. I forgot where I read it.

If I find it I'll post it. ;-0

I'm just glad that China is letting in some 20,000 North Koreans in so they don't have to be illegals. ;-)

Even if all the estimated 80 million Koreans in the world (North Korea, South Korea, Los Angeles, etc.) moved to China they would only constitute 6% of China's population.

Even the .3 of China's estimated 1.3 billion people is nearly 4 times the number of total Koreans worldwide.

That compares to Canada's Chinese population estimated to be 4.3% according to Wikipedia based on 2006 census records. ;-0

I think the numbers might now be higher 6 years later and with all the news about Chinese emigrating and studying overseas, etc. ;-0

Minus one, the victim of Canadian psycho.

Anyway, the Koreans in China would most likely assimilate and become Chinese. ;-0

Just like the conquering Manchus of the Qing Dynasty who are no longer a separate people. ;-0

I understand all what you are conveying to me, but judging from the past four hundred years of recent Chinese history; even now Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan would 在中国头上动土, prove that China should reciprocate when gentlemanly treated. Else, it should be the other way round if 人欲犯我 我必犯人. Big or small bullies only understand brute force. It is about time to 杀鸡敬猴! Enough is enough.

Charles . yes. Chinese are aware of that -- but also remember the saying, when the Manatis is aiming at the Cicada -- there is the bird standing behind -- for the total catch --- China has to be fully aware of that ... the other scenarios -- the global conflicts are different than before -- Yes, there is a time to use brute force ...and be decisive and to be well executed -- China is being tested ..

That is why US. Used the HAGUE to have arrested as war criminals from the Bosnian wars..Taylor from Liberia... The time has come where all the wrongful kills in any war has to have a price to be paid in gold...and let the Hague, the United Nations and even the American Hunan a rights do the accounting.. At the rate of ten thousand dollars per person.. US. Will not be able to have more wars....right noe it is war for the bullies with the dollar printing press.....supported by the war @!#$ of war industries, the prostitutes in the congress and the war banks. This is totally inhumane.. And insane..
