中國昔時賢文 Chinese wisdom words of the past - (072)
樹高千丈,---Shu4 gao qian zhang4,
葉落歸根.---Ye4 luo4 gui gen.
A tree may grow a thousand feet high,
But its leaves fall back to the the roots.
*One Chinese Zhang (丈) is equivalent to 3 1/3 meters
In this case it means very tall.
[A person residing away from home eventually returns to his native soil.]

樹高萬丈不離根,---Shu4 gao wan4 zhang4 bu4 li2 gen,
花開千朵不離心,---Hua kai qian duo3 bu4 li2 xin,
聳雲高樓不離地,---Song3 yun2 gao lou2 bu4 li2 di4,
萬乘之尊不離民.---Wan4 cheng2 zhi zun bu4 li2 min2.
A tree cannot grow high without roots,
A flower cannot rise without stalk,
The highest building begins at the ground,
An Emperor has no glory without subjects.

雙鳥在林,--------Shuang1 niao3 zai4 lin2,
不如一鳥在手.--Bu4 ru2 yi niao3 zai4 shou3.
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
