Wang Zhong, a navigator, was born in the county of Nanchang (南昌縣 in Jiangxi
province 江西省). In the era of the Yuan Dynasty (元朝 1206AD to 1368AD)
he had sailed the present day Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean to more than
ten countries. He wrote down his exprience as a navigator in his book called
"島夷志略 Dao Yi Zhi Lue". He was known as the "航海居先導 Hang Hai Ju Xian

Surname WANG (汪姓)

The surname Wang is about 2,500 years old.
The surname Wang originated in an area referred to during the Han Dynasty
(漢朝 206BC to 220AD) as Pingyang prefecture (平陽郡). The present day location
of Pingyang prefecture is in the southwest of Linfen county (臨汾縣 111.4
degree East and 36.1 degree North on the world map) in Shanxi province (山
西省).
In 2205BC, Si Wenming (姒文命) was elected the leader of the federated tribes.
He was known as Yu Di (禹帝). He was the progenitor of the Xia Dynasty
(夏朝 2205BC to 1784BC).
There was a tribe called Wang Mang (汪茫) who lived in a domain which was
under the jurisdiction of Yu Di. The leader of this tribe was called Fang
Feng (仿風). Yu Di appointed him to administer the region of Yuzhi (禺之
) mountain, which is in the present day Southeast of Wukang (武康) county
of Zhejiang province (浙江省).
In around 2198BC, Yu Di went for an inspection cum tour to the region of
Huiji (會稽 in the present day Wuxing county 吳興縣 of Zhejiang province).
While Yu Di was in Huiji he summoned all the leaders of the tribes to come
for a conference. All the tribal leaders attended the conference except
Fang Feng who did not follow take notice of Yu Di's message. When Fang Feng
arrived at Huiji the conference was all over. Yu Di was very angry and had
Fang Feng executed for insubordination.
On hearing that their leader had been executed by Yu Di the tribe of Wang
Mang was afraid of being attacked by Yu Di. So they left Yuzhi mountain
region and went to live in Huzhou (湖州 in the present day area west Wuxing
county 吳興縣 of Zhejiang province 浙江省).
During the Zhou Dynasty (周朝1134BC to 256BC), in the period of Warring
States (戰國時代 453BC to 221BC); the tribe of Wang Mang was subjugated
by the State of Yue (越國 in the present day Zhuji county 諸暨縣 of Zhejiang
province). When the State of Yue was conquered by the State of Chu (楚國
in the present day Jiangling county 江陵縣 in Hubei province 湖北省) in
334BC, the domain of the tribe of Wang Mang was being razed to the ground
by the troops of Yue. The tribe of Wang Mang fled west and settled down in
the present day south of Xi Xian (歙縣) of Anhui province (安徽省). They
adopted WANG (汪) as their surname and left off the word Mang (茫).

(2) Wang Da You (汪大猷 1120AD to 1200AD)
Wang Da You was born in the county of Yin (鄞縣 present day Ning Bo county
寧波) in Zhejiang province 浙江省) during the Song Dynasty (宋朝 960AD to
1279AD). During the reign of Emperor Gao Zong Zhao Gou (高宗皇帝趙構 1127AD
to 1162AD ) Wang Da You sat for the Palace Examination and obtained the
First Graduate and became a Jin Shi (進士) or Palace Graduate. He was appointed
the Governor of Jiangxi province (江西省). He was the author of the book
titled "適齋存稿 Shi Zhai Cun Gao".

(3) Wang Zhong (汪中 1744AD to 1794AD)
好古探周禮,---Hao3 gu3 tan44 Zhou Li,
嗜奇窮漢碑.---Shi4 qi2 qiong2 han4 bei.
He loved to research on the ancient propriety of the Zhou Dynasty,
His had a strange hobby on monuments erected for unknown persons.
This poem was written by Wang Zhong who specialized in Pian Wen (駢文)
which was a rhythmical prose style, marked by parallelism and ornateness.
He was born in Yang Zhou (揚州 in the present day province of Jiangsu 江
蘇省) during the Qing Dynasty (清朝 1644AD to 1911AD). His family was very
poor when he was a kid, but his mother was an educated woman. He learned
the Chinese Classics from his mother. In 1777AD the Qing Court offered him
a post as a high ranking official, but he turned down the offer. He devoted
his life in studying. He was the author of two books in rhythmical prose
called "哀鹽船文 Ai Yan Chuan Wen" and "吊黃祖文 Diao Huang Zu Wen". On
top of this he had also written several books. The most popular of them
were the "廣陵通典 Guang Ling Tong Dian" and "容甫先生遺詩 Rong Fu Xian
Sheng Yi Shi".
