Surname HU (胡姓)
Hu means reckless; blindly.
The surname Hu is about 3,000 years old.
The surname Hu originated in an area referred to during the Han Dynasty
(漢朝 206BC to 220AD) as the Anding prefecture (安定郡). The present day
location of Anding prefecture is in Guyuan county (固原縣 106.2 degree East
and 36.0 degree North on the world map) of Gansu province (甘肅省).
In 1783BC, Zi Tianyi (子天乙) founded the Shang Dynasty (商朝) which lasted
until 1122BC. Seventeen generations after Zi Tianyi one of his escendants
called Zi Shouxin (子受辛) became the 28th King and was crowned Shang King
Zhou (商紂王 1154BC to 1122BC). By nature Shang King Zhou was a cruel and
wicked. Eventually, in 1122BC, Ji Fa (姬發), the leader of the Zhou clan
(周族), destroyed the Shang Dynasty and established the Zhou Dynasty (周
朝1134BC to 256BC). Ji Fa was installed as Zhou King Wu and he moved his
capital from Qishan (歧山 present day Qishan city in Shaanxi province 陜西
省) to Hao (鎬 the present day city of Xian 西安市 in Shaanxi province).
Zhou King Wu inherited a vast country which was difficult to govern effectively.
This was primarily due to the primitive communications existed at that
time. Zhou King Wu was desperately in need of capable personnel to help
him to administer his empire. So he delegated authority to his relatives,
officials, generals and aristocrats to rule on his behalf.
Gui Efu (媯閼父) had assisted Zhou King Wu in destroying the preceding Shang
Dynasty. Zhou King Wu rewarded Gui E Fu by employing him as a Taozheng (陶
正) or officer in charge of weapons.
Gui Man (媯滿), the eldest son of Gui Efu, married Da Ji (大姬), the eldest
daughter of Zhou King Wu. Hu Gong (胡公) was the name that Zhou King Wu
gave to his son-in-law. Gui Man came to be known as Hu Gongman (胡公滿).
Zhou King Wu not only bestowed upon Hu Gongman the inheritable title of
Hou (侯) or the Marquis but also gave him the authority to rule a district
called Chen (陳 present day Huaiyang county 淮陽縣 in Henan province 河南
省). Hu Gongman renamed the district of Chen as the State of Chen (陳國)
and established his capital in Wanqiu (宛丘 present day Huaiyang county
in Henan province). Hu Gongman was the founder of the State of Chen.
Hu Gongman died of old age and some of his offspring adopted HU (胡) as
their surname in remembrance of him.
Surname HU (胡) is always referred to as Gu (古) Yue (月) or old moon.
These are the two couplets of Gu Yue:
古色新香畫別致,---Gu3 se4 xin xiang hua4 bie2 zhi4,
月光清氣春宜人.---Yue4 guang qing qi4 chun yi2 ren2.

Famous historical figures produced by Hu clan
(1) Hu Dahai (胡大海 ? to 1362AD)
Hu Dahai was born in Hong county (虹縣 present day Si county 泗縣 in Anhui
province 安徽省). He was a general in the army under the command of Zhu
Yuanzhang (朱元璋). He helped Zhu Yuanzhang in destroying the Yuan Dynasty
(元朝 1271AD to 1368AD) and established the Ming Dynasty (明朝 1368AD to
1644AD). Zhu Yuanzhang was crowned Emperor Tai Zu (太祖皇帝 1368AD to 1398AD)
. Hu Dahai was murdered by a rebellious general. Emperor Tai Zu posthumously
bestowed upon Hu Dahai the title of Zhao Guogong (趙國公) or the Prince
of the State of Zhao.
(2) Hu Quan (胡銓1102AD to 1180AD).
Hu Quan was born in Luling (廬陵) during the Song Dynasty (宋朝 960AD to
1279AD). He was a scholar and an official. After Yue Fei (岳飛), the patriotic
general, and his son Yue Yun (岳雲), were killed by Qin Kuai (秦檜), the
Prime Minister, Hu Quan wrote to Emperor Gao Zong (高宗皇帝1127AD to 1162AD),
saying that Yue Fei and his son were innocent and it was a plot set up
by Qin Kuai to eliminate them. Hu Quan requested the Emperor to have Qin
Kuai arrested trailed and executed. However, Emperor Gao Zong rejected Hu
Quan's submission.
(3) Dr. Hu Shi (胡適博士 1891 to 1962)
Hu Shi was born in Jixi (績溪) in Anhui province (安徽省). After his graduation
in a Chinese high school, the Chinese Government sent him to USA to study.
He obtained his doctoral degree from the Colombus University. When he returned
to China he urged young people to abandon the usage of classical language
and encourage them to write in vernacular language (Bai Hua 白話). He was
a great educationist. He was appointed the Chinese Ambassador to USA during
the second world war.
