The Three Pillars of Chinese Society – The Tao Foundation – Part 2.
We continue from Part 1 with Lu Tung-Pin

Here is the famous The One Hundred Character Tablet or Inscription by Lu Tung-Pin [which contains a fusion of the teachings of Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism]

The English translation [probably badly re-edited by me] is as follows –

To nurture the vital energy, the chi [the breath and energy of life],

Keep watch [focus on your Vipassana breathing] without words [meditate in silence]

To subdue the mind, act without acting [keep your mind still, just be totally aware and observe each thought as it arises and goes without reacting, grasping or clinging - do not fall asleep or have a 'blank 'mind!]

Recognize the Patriarch ['Who' is the one watching 'you' watching? 'Who' is seeing 'your' seeing?] in movement and stillness [in the coming and going of life, what is behind the phenomenon and phantasmagoria of life?]

There is nothing to be concerned about: Who else are you seeking? [why worry about 'you' or 'I' or 'self' - seek what is beyond the kaleidoscope of 'being' and 'existence']

What‘―s true and eternal [the True or Real Nature or Original Self] must respond to beings [i.e. the being as a 'noun' and the being as a 'verb']

[For it] to respond to beings you must not be deluded [by the phenomenon you see, hear etc and the phenomenon that you imagine; see beyond the beyond!]

If you are not deluded [by the karmic state and cycle or birth and death], real nature [the state beyond the karmic state of samsara] remains by itself [the unborn, the uncreated, beyond existence or non-existence]

When real nature remains [by itself; that is, no more karmic residue], vital energy returns by itself

When vital energy returns [by itself], the elixir [Transcendental Enlightenment] spontaneously forms [you need transcendental wisdom to transcend beyond the world of samsaric karma to world of total bliss, of non-dualities]

In the vessel [your bodily form] the fire [of conditioned awareness] and the water [of primordial awareness] are matched

Yin and Yang [positive and negative; phenomenon and noumenon] are born in succession

Universal transformation rolls like thunder [you are at one with the Universe - you have entered into the Inconceivable]

White clouds [Light of Wisdom] cover the peak [your Mind is represented by your head] in the morning

Spring dew [transcendental wisdom] sprinkles down on Sumeru [the spiritual mountain of your being]

Drink for yourself the wine of immortality [eternal being, a Taoist Immortal]
As you roam free [eternally in the cosmic chi of life], no one will know

Sit and listen to the tune of the zither without strings [like Kwan Yin hearing, contemplating and cultivating the eternal pulse of life]

Clearly comprehend the working of creation [the Illuminating Mind - It is all in the Mind-Consciousness! Am I dreaming of a butterfly or a butterfly is dreaming of me!]

It‘―s all in these twenty lines [5 words per line]

A true ladder straight to heaven [back to the primordial Origin]

Lu Tung-Pin

Do some research on Lu Tung-Pin and from Lu Tung-Pin you can then move on to Chang Tzu-Yang [or Chang Po-Tuan] and his fusion writing Wu Chen Pien [Understanding Reality] and later Liu I-Ming and his commentary on the Wu Chen Pien [Understanding Reality].

To be continued ..............
