The background story of this song
拷紅 - 歌手 - 周璇
This song was sung in the movie titled Xi Xiang Ji (西廂記) which was written
in the 13th century by Wang Shifu (王實甫 ). The story was about a scholar
named Zhang Sheng (張生) who came to the Buddhist Monastery to study, preparing
for the Civil Service Examinations. He saw a beautiful girl called Cui Yingying
(崔鶯鶯 Oriole) who came to the temple to pray with her mother.
A few bandits came to the temple with the intention of robbing the mother
and the daughter. Zhang Sheng was a talent young men who was not only a
scholar but also trained in martial art for self protection. He came to
defend the mother and her daughter. He fought and chased away the bandits.
Being grateful to him Oriole's mother promised Zhang Sheng that after his
Civil Examinations he could come back and marry her daughter. Without her
knowledge Zhang Sheng and Oriole fell in love with each other. When he went
to take the exam Oriole's mother tried to marry her to the original suitor.
However, the maid called Kao Hong (拷紅) told her mistress that Oriole had
already had a love affair with Scholar Zhang (米已煮成熟飯, 難更改 How to
change when the raw rice has already been cooked). Oriole's mother was very
angry and wanted to punish Kao Hong for not looking after her daughter properly.
The Mistress forced Kao Hong to tell her the whole truth.
