[World's first cloned transgenic sheep made in China]

It sounds like something out of science fiction; splicing DNA from one animal into another to create some sort of genetic hybrid, but Peng Peng the sheep has made it science fact. The adorable newly-cloned lamb has become the first sheep to have a bit of a worm spliced into him, making him the very first worm-sheep on the planet.

OK, it's not like he slithers around on the floor like a woolly worm or anything; in fact you can't tell that he's a genetic hybrid from just looking at him. But he's the first of his kind.

Chinese researchers have taken a gene from the model organism C. elegans, a nematode worm, and blended it with Peng Peng's DNA. The gene basically makes him better to eat, getting him to produce "good" fat rather than an animal's standard "bad" fat. The lead researcher behind the project, Du Yutao from the Beijing Genomics Institute in Shenzhen, told Reuters:

"The gene was originally from the C. elegans (roundworm), which has been shown (in previous studies) to increase unsaturated fatty acids which is very good for human health."

Basically the Chinese are trying to make eating lamb better for you, and why not? We've almost gotten used to the thought of eating genetically modified crops that are healthier for you, or that grow better – so why not make your meat better for your health too? If they can make lamb, beef or any other meat that's as healthy for you as vegetables it's a win-win situation – even if it's a worm-sheep chop you're munching on. [BGI via Reuters]

Martin,

This is a great post. I worked on a commercial project to produce beef containing polyunsaturated fats some thirty years ago. The fats of all ruminants which include cattle and sheep are saturated and hence they are considered to be harmful. It was found that any polyunsaturated fats such as sunflower oil when fed to ruminants become hydrogenated to become saturated as they pass through the rumen. Work carried out by the CSIRO (Australia) showed that by encapsulating the sunflower oil with a plastic material, the sunflower oil will pass through the rumen unscathed and capsules will only break down under acid conditions in the fourth stomach, the abomasum releasing the unsaturated sunflower oil. By feeding encapsulated sunflower oil to cattle, beef with polyunsaturated fat can be produced.

As a research chemist, I was involved in the sunflower encapsulation process. In the project, we sucessfully produced polyunsaturated beef, milk, butter, cheese etc and they were test marketed for over the year. Unfortunately, the project was technically a success but commercially a failure. Basically, the process was too expensive as the beef had to be sold at a premium. We had no difficulty in selling the choice cuts at premium prices but the remainder had to be sold at normal prices.

In view of my previous experience, I am thrilled that China has made a breakthrough in cloning transgenic sheep with 'good fat'. If the industrialisation of this cloning process is successful, the sky is the limit. Since cattle is also a ruminant like sheep, there is no reason why transgenic cattle cannot be similarly cloned. This suggests in the future, cardiologists might recommend that we eat more red meat and that will be a revolutionary change to our lifestyle !!

observer, We all need to welcome this process to feed the mass population in China with good quality of food. this is one very positive step into the right direction..Thank you for the wider clarification...

Thanks Paul. This is no doubt a scientific breakthrough but the commercial implications are more awesome. Currently the medical profession is discouraging people to eat red meat for health reasons. Yet the red meat market is enormous. Imagine what happens if the medical authorities change their stance? The mind really boggles. Paul, imagine what will happen to the beef exports of Argentinian and other South American countries.

China should patent this process forthwith as this is truly a trillion dollar invention. By the way many Westerners believe that the Chinese are copycats, unable to innovate. The postings by Martin Su show that these people are more wrong than dead wrong. China is on the way to stamp on its products "Innovated in China", "invented in China" and "Discovered in China" etc etc. I believe as long as China makes massive investments on education and R&D, innovations are inevitable.

Good probability in "industrialisation of this cloning process"

Observer,

Thank you for sharing your valuable and enlightening experience as a research chemist.

As you have noted, the next key step is to produce transgenic sheep on an industrial scale. Since the innovative Chinese cloning process is a new and simplified technique, there is a good probability in the mass production of transgenic sheep (see citation below).

Best regards,

Martin

dear Observer, this forum can create a much richer impact..by the hwork that we do, subject matters that we share that can foster good changes from all sides..yes, I read every post with optimism.. the only to have a global peace plan. Has to involved with China. the greed of the banking barbarians and the weapon making barbarians will no rest until they are challenged or to be dismantled,,,thevWestern value by its shallow tribal origin remains tribal and more shallow due to the burial of human wisdom..on the contrary..in what our scholars.. And not be religious fanaticism with the false power of god and demons had these western barbarians remain barbaric with wars , further bastardized by greed coming from wars and mass murder..These false claims of PAX AMERCANA, by borrowing the false victories of the Romans, or Pax romana, based on conquest and colonization will end as they are ending now by gross mistakes,, and these bankers is sucking the system dry by their parasitic interest on the other end..China will have to monitoring in nano second count with the opium bank entity like HSBC on Chinese soil and as the front and center for all the elements of massive financial destruction aiming at China and Asia..China has to monitor of every business in China ephod have their engagement withese racist, unethical bank gangsters and bye guarded with total cautio...do not ever let there be aTHIRD OPIUM WAR ever happen again to harm China...These demonic forces and creatures thus far had crippled every single nation they have managed to have infiltrated, by way of greed, by the substitution of DEMOCRACY with Greed anddestpire Driven DEMOCRACY..with total falsehood....China has to have such look out for these DEMONIC elements...not in abstract terms but in real life on this planet.

Collectively..let us continue to cheer on all innovation in China and be vigilant of the decline of the ruling elites and their princelings...I tank daily of Martin' educational post..I than also the reminder of uncle Chung to his history lessons... I am never into any political parties any where.. but in time like this..Dr. sun and even at his time, t,o mave mobilized the overseas Chinse to aid a New China.. Our roles as overseas Chinese is to continue to provide the Chinese from every where our shared experiences, with our own vision, conviction and even bias and prejudices.. For we are the one who can foster any communication gap if ideas and invention with our richest resources in this planet.. By our living experiences abroad and the broader bases of the global culture, we can read the languages of lies and deception first hand...we can decode and decipher messages..from all sides.. But the ultimate richness of us..In being Chinese..we know we wre born with human kindness.. We thank our mothers with gratitude for that 8 or 9 months of womb carrying and care.. None of us has any "original sins" , that silly tribal curse induced by false power to rule over men, and worse to have more false prophets to assume that false power..to have reduced the natural power of men, to be creative and imaginative to enrich lives with our own innate ability.. the original sin idea is one of the worst curse, it is a form of psychological ENSLAVEMENT. Of men that has to DISREGARDED and REJECTED by all men to lift suchBARBARI, ILLOGICAL falsehood...CHINA andCHINESE are the only ones in this planet who can move ahead, not by force, but by culture. To foster the GOODNESS. Of man as, by the work of WANG YANG MING,, we have to filter jowl edge coming from both thinking chambers of both INTELLIGENCE. And WISDOM, do our own "filtering" or "screening" to have KIND KNOWGE....repeat KIND KNOWLEGE with Human Conscience.

I am grateful to take claim to the grasp of the teaching of WAN YANG MING, with added vigor by the teaching of PAULO FREIRE of Brazil..

this world can not be led by any military forces of the West, nor by their loe life, by those BANKING PIMP with their collection of GREED nor USURY.

we Chinese despise those usury merchants almost as much as those in the West..of these money vultures like SHYLOCK. In THE MERCHANT OF VENICE... Written by William Shakespeare..
