Paul

I am not aware of HSBC's role in the Opiumisation of China. Thanks for digging out the connection.

Can you explain the role of the Rothschilds too? There were two Jews of renown during the time of the two Opium Wars viz Parliamentarians Benjamin Disreali and Lionel de Rothschild. Disreali was sworn into Parliament as a Christian and later became the Prime Minister. Lionel de Rothschild, however, refused to be a Christian, despite being elected to the constituency of City of London for 5 times, he was not admitted to Parliament. As a concession, Lionel's son Nathan Mayer de Rothschild was leter admitted as the first Jewish member to the House of Lords.

Disreali's famous opponent in Parliament was William Gladstone, who in opposition attacked the British Government ofr the Opium trade.
