I am not good at written Chinese - only had 2 years primary education then swapped over to English. I had to get help with the translation!
We are in the broad sense all Huaren - 华人; but in the context that I wrote it is meant to convey Chinese other than Chinese in Mainland China.
Viz-a- viz each other Overseas Chinese - Huaren - 华人 - refer to the Chinese in Mainland China as - 中国人 - and vice-versa.
Strictly speaking, the Mainland Chinese should refer the Overseas-Chinese as Huaren only where they are in countries where Chinese culture is dominant and the Chinese language is an official language of that country. Therefore only HK, Macau, Taiwan and Singapore and to a lesser extent, Malaysia qualify as such. All others [like the Overseas Chinese in UK, USA, Canada, Australia etc] should be referred to as Huajiao 华僑 - Overseas Chinese (in traditional Chinese) or 华裔 - Overseas Chinese (in simplified Chinese).
唐人 - Tong Yan - is mainly a Southern Chinese [which is most Overseas Chinese in SE Asia] colloquial term, that they call themselves as against the local natives. The Overseas Chinese in SE Asia seldom refer to themselves as 中国人.
