Surname SIMA (司馬)
Si means : manage
Ma means : horse
Si-Ma means : an ancient title of an officer who was in
charge of the armed forces of a country.
The surname Si-Ma is about 2,800 years old
The surname Sima originated in an area referred to during the Han Dynasty
(漢朝 206BC to 220AD) as Henei Prefecture (河內郡). The present day location
of Henei Prefecture is in the Wudou County (武陡縣, 113.3 degree East and
35.1 degree North on the world map) of Henan Province (河南省).
In 828BC, Zhou King Li (周厲王 878BC to 842BC), the 10th King of the Zhou
Dynasty (周朝 1134BC to 256BC) died in exiled in a place called Zhi Yi (彘
邑 in present day Huo Xian 霍縣 in Shanxi Province 山西省). His eldest son,
Ji Jing (姬靖) a young man of nineteen years old, ascended to the throne
as Zhou King Xuan (周宣王 827BC to 781BC). In 826BC Zhou King Xuan appointed
an official called Chengbo Xiufu (程伯休父) as the Sima (司馬) or officer-in-
charge of the armed forces. In 822BC Zhou King Xuan ordered Chengbo Xiufu
to lead an punitive force to crush the Xu Rong who staged a rebellion. The
Xu Rong were a nomadic tribe who lived in the north. The forces under the
command of Chengbo Xiufu crushed the Xu Rong rebellion.
Chengbo Xiufu returned in triumph to Hao (鎬), the capital of the Zhou Dynasty.
Zhou King Xuan was very happy and he allowed Chengbo Xiufu to adopt his
official title SIMA (司馬) as his surname. Chengb Bo Xiu Fu gave Sima as
the surname to his children. Generation after generation the offspring of
of Cheng Bo Xiu Fu's offspring continued to use Sima as their surname.

河內閥閱.---Henei fa2 yue4.
