Surname ZHUGE (諸葛)
Zhu means: all; various.
Ge means: a creeping plant
The surname Zhu-Ge is about 2,000 years old.
The surname Zhuge originated in an area referred to during the Qin Dynasty
(秦朝 221BC to 207BC) as the Langye prefecture (瑯琊郡). The present day
location of Langye prefecture is in Zhucheng county (諸城縣 119.4 degree
East and 36.0 degree North) in Shandong province (山東省).
Huang Di (黃帝) or the Yellow Emperor, appointed one of his followers called
Zhan Ge (詹葛) to govern a settlement which Zhan Ge named it after himself
as Ge (葛 in the present day county of Ningling 寧陵縣 in Henan province
河南省).
During the Xia Dynasty (夏朝 2205BC to 1766BC) the leader of the settlement
of Ge was conferred the title of Bo (伯) or the Count by a Xia King. The
leader of Ge was known as Ge Bo (葛伯) or the Count of Ge. The settlement
was then renamed as the State of Ge (葛國) and became a protectorate State
of the Xia Dynasty.
In 1818BC, Si Gui (姒癸) became the 17th King of Xia. Si Gui was a very
intelligent man and a tyrant. He married a beautiful woman named Shi Meixi
(施妹喜) who loved to listen to the sound of tearing silk. So Si Gui employed
many weavers to produce silk cloth just for her to tear. Si Gui built many
palaces and in the process he wasted all the resources in the country. His
subjects suffered greatly under such a ruler.
There was a powerful clan called Shang (商族) who lived in the present day
Shangqiu county (商丘縣) in Henan province (河南省). Its domain was the
whole of the central plain of what we now call China and the Valley of Changjiang
(長江) or the Yangtze River. The leader of this clan was called Zi Tianyi
(子天乙) who was a former prisoner of Si Gui.
After his release Zi Tianyi went back to his domain. Zi Tianyi used a very
intelligent man called Yi Yin (伊尹) as his Premier. Gradually Shang became
a prosperous, strong and powerful State. It began to conquer the neighbouring
protectorate States of the Xia Dynasty. One of such States was the State
of Ge which was conquered by Zi Tianyi in 1783BC. The offspring of Zhan
Ge adopted GE (葛) as their surname.
Eventually, Zi Tianyi destroyed the Xia Dynasty and established the Shang
Dynasty (商朝1783BC to 1122BC). Zi Tianyi was installed King Cheng Tang
(成湯王).
During the Qin Dynasty (秦朝221BC to 207BC) there were many well organized
armed bands rebelling against the Qin Government. Ge Ying (葛嬰), a descendant
of Zhan Ge, was in a band controlled by Chen Sheng (陳勝). Ge Ying was a
good fighter and a leader of a group who had won many battles. However,
Chen Sheng was jealous of him and accused him of treason and had him executed.
After the Qin Dynasty had collapsed, Liu Bang (劉邦) established the Han
Dynasty (漢朝 206BC to 220AD). In 179BC, Liu Huan (劉桓) was crowned the
3rd Emperor of Han Dynasty. Liu Huan, reigned until 157BC and conferred
the title of Zhu Xian Hou (諸縣侯) to the grandson of Ge Ying and he was
known as Zhuge Hou (諸葛侯). The offspring of Zhuge Hou adopted ZHUGE (諸
葛) as their surname.
The couplet of surname Zhuge,
姓啟葛伯,---Xing4 qi2 Ge Bo,
望出瑯琊.---Wang4 chu Langye.
The progenitor of surname Zhuge was Ge Bo,
And it was originated from the prefecture of Langye.
